does anyone out there know what temperature range components in the engine bay are rated at and mainly what is the average continous running temperature inside the engine bay?

Why not set up a digital termometer in the engine bay to a display on your dash. You can get these things from places like dick smith and jaycar.

i dont want it for a continous thing. its only so i know what rating of thermo-plastic alloy i can use to build the cai box. im only after a fairly general range as in does it only get up to 100 or 200 or 1000. it doesnt have to be precise. surely someone out there must have a rough idea.

grab a turkey temperature thingie.. and stick it in the engine bay....
then drive around hard and see wht temp it gets up to...
those turkey things can go up to a few 100' degrees.

I once got a digital thermometer and stuck it next to my pod. As the car
moves, the temperature drops to mid 20s. When stationary at the lights,
it got to mid 50s. This was done in autum and the pod has a CAI ducting
to it but is not enclosed.

hey thanks for that. is that all? i would have thought it was higher. that will make it heaps easier if it only gets up that high.

In the height of summer (ambient 40C) with twin thermo's going and a/c on I'd figure it could approach 60C at idle, maybe up to 70C after a long trip. If you figure a maximum of 100C then you should be well & truly ok.

The hottest area will be in front of the firewall between it and the motor - that was the highest temp area in my TN (aside from directly above exhuat manifold but that was supposed to have heat shield fitted :p it was funny driving to uni when it rained and watching steam waft off the bonnet for 5mins after I switched off  )

Oh and there is only 1 time I've heard of engine bay temps reaching 1000C - new Lamborghini Diablo after 3 hour blast on autobahn, it melted it's aluminium exhaust heat shields; the journo/driver said he could see solidifed puddles of molten aluminium on the roadway.

thanks guys. this has all really helped. i found a good site in adelaide with heaps of info in it so now i know the temps i will go ahead with chosing the a material. i might even be able to make it out of something really cool like a glass grade clear composite plastic. will let you all know how im going.

The exhaust dump pipe reaches around 800 Degrees on my car in full load full boost conditions. Average exhaust gas temp in the dump is around 180 / 250 degrees, so ambient temp in the engine bay will be a lot lower.

Please please tell me afterwards as I'm in the same situation. I've got a
K&N pod in a ks verada with cold air ducting but would really love to
enclose the pod.
