Ok for all those people have a semi-automatic is it worth getting one or better off just sticking to either an auto or manual?

I suppose i would only get one cause it would be a bit more fun then just pressing the peddle...

just wondering what peoples thoughts are on semi-automatic?????????

night/day whatever

Dude go with the manual,,,,I've gotta Semi' and im real bored with it. Its better than a stock auto, but couldn't compare to a manual,,,and i'm saving up for one!!!

My TL is semi. It's a hoot. Smooth as silk and can still pretend I'm changing gears. Never had a manual, but have driven quite a few. Hate em. Why? have you ever had your left leg under the wheel trying to steer while making a rollie with a cup of coffee between your legs while slipping in another m'n'm disc while trying to put your foot on the clutch at the lights when the car is kangarooing because you accidently put it in third not first. An auto is a lazy mans way, but I got sick and tired of having to have an epileptic left foot.

LOL, yeah kansai it is hard to eat/drink and change gears through traffic, if not imposible for some, the Semi is great if you have to drive in heavy traffic all the time, and it still gives you the option of holding gears or gear braking, but the shifts can be slow and a little uninspiring, it gets boring sometimes.

But if you enjoy driving and want the thrill of changing gears dropping the clutch etc go the manual its a hell of a lot more fun when you want to really get stuck in to some serious driving, through twisty roads, personally i dont mind driving the manual in traffic especially with the 3.5 it is just so smooth and easy to drive.

hmm ok i just read what a semi auto was.

So basically its a clutchless manual  That would be very strange.

well actually it's more like a auto in which you choose when to change gears. There are clutchless manuals out there I believe, but they're in high end models, read BMW M3s and the like.

On topic, I rather like the tiptronic, cause you can keep your everyday grandma driving style programmed into your auto (gear changes at lower rpm) while still being able to rev the snot out of the car once in a while :D

Exactly. My mum can still drive it to the shops and I can switch to semi auto and put the boot in. I like the way it changes down for you but won't change up until you want to. Very cool technology. The gearing is a bit different to the manual as well, not quite as quick but still winds out OK. With a few mods I reckon a semi could hold it's own with a manual.

My last car was a tip-auto. It's the same INVECSII auto as any other Magna, except that you can sequentially change the gears if you want. And that means you can't go from 4th down to 2nd in one go - it's sequential.

It's certainly better than a standard auto, as you can hold the up change longer than the ECU would normally let you - so better performance. However, at the end of the day it doesn't compare to a proper manual. If you like to really get the most performance out of your car, it has to be a manual.

The biggest problem I see with the tippy, is that it still uses the auto gearbox, which essentially gives you one less gear than a manual.

The other problem being an auto and having an auto ecu attached is that you can never argue with the ecu. An example of this is, I wanted to go up a steep hill rather quickly, the lowest gear I could get back to was 2nd. Even though I manually put the shifter back to 1st, the ecu decided that this would not be good for my car and would'nt drop back to 1st. The real stupid thing was, that the ecu was wrong on this occasion. Instead of flying up the hill I crawled up the hill. Arrghhhh annoying.

Definitely get a manual if you can. Semi's are ok, but really only a gimmick. Theres nothing you can do in a semi that you cant do with just a plain auto.

Depends. There is 4 and 5 speeders.

True but the 5 speed autos are generally in the high end models like ralliarts and veradas. The basic models still use the 4 speed dont they??

Verada, Ralliart, VRX and sports all use the 5 speed autos. The base specs are the ones with the 4 speed.

Another dis-advantage to auto transmissions beside not being able to be in the right gear all the time is the increased driveline loss :P

So would people pay the little bit extra for the semi or are the new magnas up there power wise, im still deciding on a normal auto or semi-auto, i know its more a gimmic but im not into manauls(phone/drink = impossible) and wouldnt mind having the semi/auto options.

What do people think? getting a semi OR just normal auto...... need ideas!!

Is it just me or do people get bored with auto and feel like once in a while doing it manually????

i would never drive an auto again if i had a choice

manuals are so much better to drive you have the choice to grandma drive or boot it when you want/need

If the choice is only between auto and semi, definitely go the semi.

I recomend semi / Triptronic,

Mitsu was trend setter and now virtually every other car manufacturer is following it. Even people who are not mitsu fan when looking for new cars specailly ask if it got triptronic or simple auto.

every good new cars now a days have it with some exceptions off course.

unless other wise you are after full time performance go with mannaul.
