hey guys,
I am the proud owner of a 95 ts magna (4 cyl auto)
i have had the timing chain changed (twice and im still hearing noises)
mech said the engine isnt keeping oil pressure hence the noise.
heres my dillema
Do I
1. spend 2,500 ish on a engine recon and hopefully have the engine last me for a long time to come
2. get a 2nd hand motor and pray it lasts.
or 3
find an alternative engine (pref staying as a 4 cyl.)
or 4.. something else..
would really love to hear your feedback guys... obviously the cheeper i can get out of it the better but im willing to spend the $ for the car to last.
cheers

If you buy a used engine only buy something that you have seen running in the wreck, with a 2.6L listen for timing chain and lifters on startup and run it till the oil is hot. some 2.6L don't get noisy till their hot. The only used engines I have had trouble with are the ones I didn't hear running before I bought them. Expect to pay between $500-$800 for a good used tr/ts 4cyl. This is probably a few hundred dollars more than the cheapest option of replacing the oil pump which may or may not be, the cause of your oil pressure loss

$2500 sounds a bit steep for AstronII engine re-power, even from a joint giving a decent 12m/20,000km warranty.
If the rest of the car, transmission & drivetrain are good for another 5y, a re-power is good. Paying stampduty & transfers & dealer delivery etc etc to buy new wheels is just money down the drain.
Shop around more on the re-power, I'd say.
hmmm, i dnt think we paid that much wen we got a new engine... but thats all we got, we didnt get the EFI changed or the gearbox replaced, only the engine

yeah I know.
Last time I asked I think AstronII repowers were about $1500-1800 with good warranty from big-name places that do nobody no favours.
For $2500... I'd be expecting a whole power+transaxle transplant: engine, gearbox & driveshafts, suspension struts etc.
Could buy a whole car for less than that.

Conversion from the Galant would be awesome, may cost a bit more and require a bit of work tho, as Im not sure if there are many going around atm.

Perhaps find a new mechanic, one who solves the problem of the oil pump and can fit a chain that lasts as long as it should :D
I have never had problems fitting them and having them last, if the oil pressure is low, change the oil pump as this can be a problem in magna 4's

get a 6 cylinder :)
Yeah, i have a stock 6 cyl in my magna, and it kicks 4cyl ones. Much better with a 6. (sound better stock than a 4cyl does too) As for the fact my one is stock, give me time...
