depends wat meter it was read off of, new one = lower reading.

DeMonio
01-03-2005, 05:54 PM
yeah it was an old meter which is a diapham type which gives a higher reading, and I haven't tested with the new one. I did have two 15's tho.

:) Well im just a chicky starting out but I had it tested recently(DEC) and I got a shock It only got 131db. Was alittle disappointed but still happy as she cranks. lol I only have 2 pioneer 12's in a sealed box and it also has a new beauty panel on it to now.As of last week end(SWEET). I am currently updating my amps though as I know this is what is let me down. I have any new shots of system yet but will post some this week, I have to thank kezza big time for the system set up as he designed and made the entire thing.. Thanks kez.http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/5/web/677000-677999/677205_102.jpg

Not bad - I got 139.8 (just under 140db doah!) out of a single 15" running off 300W Rms in a Saab Turbo. Hehe.

Managed to get 135db in the magna before I got rid of the sub/amp, and moved to a freeair 12" Kicker, 118 db, not too shabby for something that weighs under 10Kg and takes up next to no boot space!

Holy crap batman.... A 2000 WRMS class A amp  That must have set you back half a car? You could fry a steak on that thing if it's not fan cooled.

I'm not pulling enough :(

with 2x subs on my avatar, I'd like to pull 126dB.

No amp (or box) as yet... going for a monoblock, around 100W and sealed box.

No way that your amp is class A.... :bowrofl:

Ran some mono 450W class A amplifiers recently. 10RU (Rack units - as in 19" wide, and about 12" tall, and 18" deep) - operating temp was about 50 degrees celcius on the rear heatsink *idling*. (Load, but no music) 50Kg each too :(

Class A amplifiers are highly sought after because they have no crossover distortion - the way they do this is to have both transistors conducting at exactly the same time, and run very high quiescent currents - very inefficient (think about 50%), produce an absolute 5hitload of heat - a 2Kw amp would produce about 4KW of HEAT. (And consume 6KW - at 12V, this is 170A, requiring at least 0 guage, and more than one battery to drive.

So unless your amp meets all of these requirements, and produces the same amount of heat as *TWO* 2KW fan heaters on full power inside the car, I think it is a fairly safe bet that it *isn't* class A.

A 2 X 50WRMS Class A amplifier for automotive use is feasible, but pass 100W per channel, it rapidly becomes stupid (the requirement for watercooling, for instance - could be solved by placing it in stream with the vehicles cooling system, or placing another radiator in the car). The powersupplies are also rather painful to design.

Most 2KW amps are also Class D (as in switchmode amps - because of the relative inefficiencies in class AB, Class B has serious xover distortion, and class C just plain sucks)

Try class AB - you may have class A operation for the first 20WRMS or so.

Here are some working designs (I have made a few for the heck of it) of class A amplifiers - read the comments on heatsinks :)

Heath... On the money...

I never said one amp though ;)

There are 2 amps... Soundstream Picassos each 18" x 11" and yes they weigh a tonne... (Who needs a lowered car when u have these?)

fyi not 170 amps... 160amps Very inneficient I know... :( I'm not sure if it will be hitting 2kw rms yet as I haven't got the birthsheets. (Not to mention subs or fronts that can handle that) They are 4 channel amps, so If I want to be getting some decent power out of them they will have to be bridged (bye bye damping factor but should still sound good :) ) 0.02% THD. Also means I'm very limited with Voice coil configs, but believe it or not the aim still remains as sq.

I'm not exactly sure on the specs and how underrated the amps are. Can only find info in German, as these aren't a local amp. There's no info around the American websites.

From the box each amp is rated at 4x110w rms which bridges into 2x440. I'm not sure how underrated these babies are though.

Already got 0 gauge through the car (And they said it wouldn't come in handy) won't need a second battery yet, but looking at getting an Odyssey 800amp battery for em.

We will see how she goes :D

Good work Red Devil, didn't know we had so many kilowatts in here... Let us know how the records go, that would be massive.

I don't plan on working these babies too hard, (I don't even wanna open the plastic  ) so we may never know...

Peace

Tim

Turbo_Charade - 139db isn't too hard to achieve in a car the size of a lunchbox.

 Well guys and gals. I entered another comp with my new products in car this weekend only to get a lower reading than last time.. 129.6db. But this is still to get another amp and spilt the box also as I found out the way it set up is making the subs react at differnet times to each other. I didnt recieve any awards. damn!! But its all good. i felt like a total dick though as I was the only chick in the whole comp. all the other bimbos were justing hanging off their men or their cars as if it was theirs. lol takes a real women to enter and admit defeat. I would rather lose every time than stand by my man. Instead we stand together at these things. lol

Can anyone give me proper advice on how to achieve a better db??? pm me if you can .Thanks Mel

a mate just got 155db from his polk momo stereo in his pulsar ....damn its loud

ive decided that im not gonna go crazy in audio gear now i mean its really hard to get high db readings and such a big car so i decided to go for clarity and a bit of deep bass and be happy as is :)

Enough money can get you db's...

Takes a bit of knowledge in box building, walls, car construction.... etc

Tips for more db's - Mel...

Close your airvents/windows in your car. Get a smaller car, use a hatchback, rear load off a wall. Don't use sound deadener, Tint ur windows, lie on ur windows, dont use ur battery before the event Turn off unnecessary amps etc, any power use is bad news.. Bigger shorter power wires, charge up ur battery well before events. Always burp using TONES! Not music... Music will never get good results. If you dont know what tones work best do basic bass sweeps. Use a stacker with a pause/play remote...
Big ports = big db's...

Then go nuts and concrete up ur doors, brace ur windows, build a podium ;)

etc etc

Loud cars are boring... Sq takes skill :)

Peace

Tim

Sif...SQ cars are just too pedantic and eventually u just scrap it because its taking too long, costing too much, or you just lose interest :P Drive around in my '82 corrola, with my 3 15s and over 5kwrms of monoblock power is cooler  Remember to wind your windows down, wear your cap backwards and leave your arm out the door.

Howd you know it was taking so long and costing so much??? Who told you!!!

I don't know. Unless you're in db dragging and are actually going to the comps often and raking in the trophies I would get more appreciation out of a system that sounds good.

Not saying you can't sound good and be loud. SQL style... My doors absolutely hammer now with just 6.5"s and are still easy to listen to... If you want a real sq system you have to go the 8's or 9's in the doors though... Choppy Choppy.

Mind you it would be pretty cool to just blast people away with ~160 odd dbs at ur fingertips... But I'm sure ud hurt urself a bit more lol

Peace

:) thanks for the advice Tim. I agree sq does take more skill and at the moment more $$ than i can afford. I have been told by the group that ran it that all i need is the other amp to run my speakers. So thats something. As for leaning on the windows.. lol I sit on the boot to get the vibrations.

All serious now. i have tinted windows have short enough power wires and i didnt have car running anything for atleast 3 hrs prior to it. Air vents?? didnt know this made much diff. i have the centre piece down in back seat so it allows it to load up some in the car body along with the boot. When i did the tuning for it I used the actual event cd they use at auto barn comps, People we know help too hey...
The box im using was designed for the correct volume it needed then just added beauty panels after.
Thanks for your advice any more hints would be grateful.

For SQ try Zapco / Audison / Tru tech
For Spl try e - audio / Caliber / D3's :D

The above mentioned make average amps.

Question thou, why not deaden you car for increased SPL? Less energy lost through vibrating panels ( i.e. why you see people hold there windows and boot ) the more SPL I would be thinking. Most loud SPL cars ( 155+ ) are just so loud no amount of deadening helps

The deadener stops vibrating panels... But as the tar is soft it absorbs the pressure as well. I'm not talking big figures and would always deaden my car otherwise you look like a fool. A good way to get good db's is to make mdf enclosures everywhere. Which is why the pros take out the dash etc and mdf the whole car up.
