hey guys i'm currently getting quotes for pacemaker extractors and have been blown away with the difference in price from store to store!

NONE of these quotes are from phillcom rally!still waiting on Anthony's quote

i called 4 companies today-

1.$650 fitted
2.$580 fitted
3.$845 fitted!!!

then i went to a muffler shop near my work and got them to ring their suppliers to get a price, the first supplier quoted $620 not inc fitting fee and said that pacemakers just went up 10% today! hold on it gets worse, the second supplier quoted $850 not inc fitting fee!!!

what the hells going on? i saw a set on ebay today going for $395+$20 freight.

pays to shop around!

As far as I undertsood it they are mandrel bent. Where did you get the info from TC?

Edit:... by the way, Midas did mine for $550, Mr muffler went cheaper then that but they stuffed me around too much and lost my business.. they just went lower to try to get me back... I am sure you can haggle the price down to around $500.

If you're quoted $600+ you can get custom headers made for the same $$. I still maintain that Pacemaker and RPW headers are TOO SHORT for bottom and mid torque where the Magnas really need it.

Have you seen RPW's newest ones? They're pretty long.

I agree with EZ Boy. I fitted Pacemakers to my previous TH Sports, and wasn't overly excited by the result. A bit of extra pick-up in the high rev range, but I'm sure they actually reduced the critical low-end grunt.

I appreciate your luv of most things RPW. They're still short of what I would like to see for a tuned length header. The "Race Headers" you are referring to are certainly a better buy than the "Street Headers".

I found the following link VERY good reading, there is a lot out there if you've got time to research.

I've spoken to Pacemaker and their headers are quite short. The other thing that really bothered me was the claimed accuracy of equal length primaries: "give or take a couple of inches". :gtfo:

Not good enough if you can mass produce from a jib, then you can do the job properly imho

ooops, i have really only seen a hand full of VL and Falcon extractors and they were all press. They must have changed.

I'm inclined to agree that for ease of mass production and economics that the curves would be from cut pipe donuts rather than being press or mandrel bent. Mandrel is pretty time consuming and I imagine that mass production of identical components comes with a high staff turnover, so specialist fabrication is not likely to be found in this type of product.

Not most, I only have got their headers. There's been enough said elsewhere.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Short headers are great for high rpm flow and long for low rpm torque.

whats the estimated gain on a v6 3L with a redback muffler and a k&n filter?

fencer
06-03-2005, 06:09 AM
From the muffler - probably 5-6KW or so.

From the K&N panel - absolutely zero.

I've dyno tested that the standard Mitsu air filter is actually as free flowing as no filter at all (and you can't get any freer flowing than that - elaborate CAI system aside).

I actually ment the extractors lol :)

Does anyone know or have any experience of other 'custom' or not extractors that can be purchased in Australia. I know there are fantastic things in the states but its not worth getting them here. I had RPW streets on my last car and wasnt exactly blown away. Liverpool exhaust? Others?

Found these as an example. Now they are long primaries! However we dont need the California spec multiple cats. Just an example but they look very efective.

So are Pacemakers considered "the" brand of headers for Magnas? I remember from my younger days Genie was usually the brand of choice.

pacemakers are definatley the most popular, RPW headers are a lot more expensive and give a slightly better result.

I still maintain that if you're going to fork out for a set of headers, get them custom made with lengths and joining to suit your application, anything else is a compromise that will piss you off everytime you drive your car - I'm sure that's not what you want :D

you got custom headers?

'bout to own a muffler centre, so you bet I will.

I've been researching them for about 5months online and with hot rodders and ex-speedway guys who hang around my old man. These guys raced straight six holdens against every V8 config ever built (1970-85) before all the ex-yank supercar blocks started arriving care of guys like Ron Pine etc that had more money than driving ability. So I think they know what they're on about, esp since many of these guys have there own mechanical/performance shops now.

My biggest limitation is the new daughter and Mrs just going back to work.

My advice is unchanged: Make sure you get what's going to compliment YOUR driving style, not just your AMC signature

what sort of cost are we looking at for custom headers?
Im not really worried about top speed as speed limit is 110, but bottom end would be nice.

Would be very interested EZ Boy as mine would be the same fitment as yours. What do you think it would cost? Id drive up the coast for that.

congrats mate!

the longer the extractors the better the bottom end and the shorter the better the top end?
let me know how you go with your customs cause i'm probably going to buy some pacemakers before the end of the month.

i definately think that getting a set of headers made that make your magna start pulling earlier.

Last year when I phoned around I was quoted $650 installed, and my car off the road for a week (?) by a muffler shop, other shops weren't really interested - esp the bigger shops. Pacemakers I believe don't bolt up to the AWD dump pipe or cat. So some customising is necessary whichever you choose - makes it hard for the DIY guys.

Keep your fingers crossed for me trying to buy this Shop!!

Longer for down low, short for higher rom torque peaking. Now you have to select an efficient primary tube diameter and design a good collector all with out dragging it along the ground when you drive. Not impossible, just involved. That's why Pacemakers and other brands IMO are 'short' headers. Not as terminal as the stock item of course :bowrofl:

I don't think we'll be in the workshop before April at the earliest
