View Full Version : 6.5" Spilts in the rear parcel shelf...??

Just wondering if its possible... as i id rather have spilts in the parcel shelf with tweeters mounted in the back doors, so the passangers get some decent quality as well.
I was thinking of making some MDF 6x9" to 6.5" spacers.... so the spacer screws into the factory mounting holes, and the 6.5" spilt screws to the spacer.
Is it possible? What I want to know is, is there enough room under the factory speaker grill to mount a spacer and a 6.5" spilt? Will I be able to get the stock grill back on?
Cheers

Hey Pete,
When I installed my 6x9 clarions in the parcel shelf of the TF, this is the result i got : (see pic) I had to take off the plastic surround from the speaker and file the edges of the grille down for the original grille to fit back on... pass in the rear behind actually... I guess it all depends on the brand and height of the speakers as to whether they'd fit without an modification. ie... don't htik the spacers woudl fit without modifiying it somehow.
Hope that helps a little

you know u don't have to install the grills that came with the 6x9s under the factory magna grills? i'm sure 6.5" splits would fit with some MDF spacers (probably about 8-12mm)
i'm going to do this soon with some 5" Focals splits like the ones in the front doors, although i would mount the tweeters in the C-pillar or parcel shelf rather than the doors, its a good idea not to seperate them too much.

ok thanks..
Im hoping 6.5" splits will have a bit more room though as they dont have the tweeter etc mounted in the centre, so they are flat across the top.
You have your speakers grill on in the photo... I want to stick the magna grill back on so I dont advertise what speakers I have (i wont be using the speakers grill underneath). Is there much room under the magna grill? (how do you get it off so I can see for myself?)

lol you posted while i was replying! Sounds like you wanna do exactly what im thinking of doing.
Your right though, tweeters in the parcel shelf is a better idea, and might even sound better as they would be nearer to head height.
Let me know how you go!

The speaker grille doesn't fit under the stock grille, so you need to take it off to fit the stock back in. To get the stock grille off, unscrew from the top of your boot( under the parcel shelf) - think it's 3 or 4 screws if i remember correctly- don't know if you have access to this with your current sub setup in your boot (assuming there is one there...), but should be able to get to it.

a set of 6" speakers in the back would b enough, if not, then u could always put the splits in the rear door. my thoughts.

Bonnie: Why do you want the grills off the speakers on there when the stock grill looks a f**kload better! Stoooopid!
Asylum & Poita: Why don't you guys get 6" Compression Horns, CoAx's or something.. Hi Pass the suckers and that way you just get mid and treble out of them..
No bass.. thats what your subs are for!
Asylum: Which Focals are you getting..?!?! I got a set of 165K3s sitting in my room.. brother's bought them for my birthday last year..

Yerr I reckon leave the stock grilles on ppl. Looks ghey with a messy parcel shelf. Or do some custom work and do the whole lot.
If you're gonna go with splits in the rear mount the tweets as close as possible to the woofers, otherwise you'll get bad separation.
I think the worst thing to do would be to have the tweets in front and the woofers behind. Would sound pretty bad having only high frequency in ur face.
Why not think about mounting some 3.5" coaxials in the rear doors if you wanna go to a lot of effort for the rear passengers. This is really the only need for rear speakers if you have a sub. Unless you are running surround sound you dont want music coming from behind you. 6x9's are only there for bass without a sub.
A good idea if you really want a bit of rear fill, is to run the rears in mono, this avoids any staging from the rear which can detriment your stereo imaging from your fronts.

I wouldnt put splits in the back. The sound will be hitting hte backs of their ears anyway so it'll be pointless.
Just get some nice 6x9's they will do the job quite well. You'd be surprised.

Or even better... Invest in good front speakers with the money you'd spend on the rears... With good enough fronts and good enough amplification it will surround you anyway

I've got some sony splits in the back of mine, just used them because i already had them and needed some rear fill i put the tweaters on the parcel shelf aswell. The woofers fit into the 6x9 holes in my TF but i had to drill new screw holes, because they didnt line up.
