View Full Version : Still sitting under the house !!
Hi guys and girls i dont know if ya remember me or not but posted about the idle on my 92 verada ! Well we have had the idle sensor and stepper motor and there has been no change
When the stepper motor was replaced it worked for a whole 5 hours and then just wouldnt idle again !! Please note found this out the hard way pulling onto the highway with it stalling and steering locked heading for a ditch.
Anyway does anyone have any more ideas what it could be? Apparently the fans not kicking on eitehr unless the air con is on :S Also its blowing a **** load of smoke any have a quick fix remedy to get us few the next few months and then either rebuild or second hand motor ( which if anyone has one for cheap please let me know)
Oh yeh have bought Brand New Mitsubishi Magna TR Series Throttle Body which shall arrive in a few days so we are going to try that and see how it goes :S
Any ideas ladies and gents ?

What exact problem are you having?
1) won't idle, or
2) stalls when not at idle (driving along)
Could be something as simple as clogged fuel filter, water in fuel etc.
Intermittant faults due to dirty connections eg engine position sensor,
dodgy aged electronics which start failing due to heat etc.

Um, steering don't lock unless you've turned the key to OFF.
If the engine dies, you'll probably lose pressure to the power steering which makes
the steering (AND BRAKES) heavier but if you muscle harder they'll still work.

If you don't care much about the future life of your engine, you can try those
"Stop Smoke" gunk you pour into your oil to make it thick like jelly.
wont idle at all! used to turn on idle a bit then stall now ya have to have your foot on the accelerator for it to even start :S
I realise it will only lock on off but i was making a comment so people would know just how screwed up the situation is :S
we are going to rebuild the motor at the end of the year so just going to try that stop smoke for now :)

You could always adjust the idle stop screw to idle a bit higher , i did it with mine never had a problem since and it never falls below 700rpm.

Just a random thought: no idea if it would actually work, but what about adjusting the accelerator cable so the when ur foot is off the pedal, (ie engine is idling), the throttle setting is a bit higher. I have know idea if this will actually work (as I dont know how magnas work with the throttle), but that was how we got my old volvo (first car...) to work properly. It has the same problem, although it would start, and then stall. (turned out that the previous owner has adjusted the throttle DOWN coz he though it was idling too fast. is 650rpm too fast for an idle???)

Could possibly need to reset the ISC control, there were some posts about this fairly recently, BUT does anyone know which wire you need to bypass to reset? This part of the instructions was extremely vague!
From how I understand it, you need to do some bypass work to reset the ISC system, once this is reset, adjust the idle screw to a "normal" rate, then the ISC should just adjust it above and below to counter any changes in operation. If it's not set properly, and not reset, the ISC will be working overtime to try to change it, and burn out quick. Correct, anyone?
