ok here is where i show how clueless i am about things under the bonnet of my car. Today what i did was wire up some speakers that were previously disconnected back up to my amp. I disconnected the negative terminal of the battery first, then hooked up the wires and RCAs, then went and attached the negative battery terminal again.

Ok so i go turn the key in the ignition, firstly that first little twist of the key so the stereo comes on, then another twist to turn all other electrical on, and at this point i hear a pretty loud TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK. so i quickly turn the key back. then i try again, and this time just one TICK. I tried it over and over and about every 5th time the indicator lights flashed as it had the TICK noise.

I disconnected battery and connected it again but to no avail. The picture below shows where the noise is coming from. All my lights/indicators work.

Whats happened!? I bet its something really simple and im going to feel completely stupid

Definitely an aftermarket box. Most likely the alarm/immoboliser as the others have said.

Hmmmm does it start???

If it does'nt start, it almost sounds like a flat battery. The ticking noise often comes from the starter motor that does'nt have enough power to crank the engine.

As for that thing you pointed out...no idea what that does. Cant find a reference to it in my haynes manual at a quick glance. Too dark to go outside too.

well bugger me dead eh. Just checked my brothers TH, and it doesnt have it.

This thing says "Relay" on it and a whole lot of numbers, but it does have a Mitsubishi symbol on it.

Take note of all the numbers and stuff and do a google search. The clicking noise is the metal contacts in the relay opening and closing when voltage is applied. Do you have aftermarket driving lights? Try cleaning your battery terminals and connections or charging the battery. Sounds like a weak battery/crook connection.
Check if Osama Binladen was in the neighbourhood. Tick tick tick sound is suspicious. :D

Is it the relay for your Amp or something to do with the Stereo?
What happens if you undo what you did that stuffed it up in the first place?
