Hey All,

I have been doing some reading in the forum, about doing a VR4 swap on a 1st Gen, i was wondering if anyone knows exactly what is involved? Whether the gearbox bolts up, whether the driveshafts will fit, what has to be done to the engine mounts etc.

Now i know what you guys are thinking, i already have a motor nearly complete, but its gonna get pretty boring for me i would say, so later in the year i will probably sell the motor and ECU, and go for a VR4 conversion.

Thanks,
AF

sogz still is doing his conversion, and you basically may as well get everything from that car, engine, gearbox, wiring harness and ecu coz its appar a pain otherwise, and you need the mounts custom done. as to where and why sogz knows.

I have been doing some reading in the forum,

TM-SE-RED, i have used the search function, it comes up with heaps of differant ideas...

Some people reckon the box will bolt right up, and will only need one mount changed, and Sogz reckons the driveshafts wont fit..

Gearbox wont matter, ill get a 2wd one off a Galant GSR, so i wont have to worry about the VR4 being 4wd.

or just lock off the rwd function with the awd gbox, same diff. pretty sure sogz did that, but i could be quoting someone else.

Yeah, i could do that to, then it leaves me with the possability of a AWD conversion later on

Yeah i saw that post to, but i think that was the 1st Gen box.

orite to clear things up
-TN gearbox will bolt up but needs to have a new hole drilled (TP boxes are different i think so it may go up perfect) But in the end its not worth it because the box will die.. My syncros **** themselves after a good 2mins of 20psi boosting
-Get the Jspec VR4 box with switchable tranny, disconnect the transfer case and lock the box to FWD... if u are lucky u will get one with a Front LSD
-Ur gonna need to get a custom Drivesharft made as the magna one is too short
-Ur gonna need 1 custom mount made for the passenger side engine mount, pretty easilydone, all u need to do is combine the magna chassis mount with the vr4 engine mount.
-Ur gonna need a decent clutch that will cope with the power
-Ur gonna need a better fuel pump
-The standard vr4 ecu will patch into the magna loom no problems

umm thats all i can think of atm...
And for a update on my car...All the emissions are perfect but currently the idle speed controller is playing up causing the car to stall after heavy acceleration.

there's already a 4wd first gen, if you look up my sapporo section on fastmagna, the info is there.

Alright,

Sogg, how would the GSR Galant gearbox hold up?

i THINK Gsr boxes use the same internals as a magna box. but i wouldnt recommend it anyway. No point having a 170kw+ engine and not being able to get the full performance out of it because u gotta be a soft cock on the gearbox....

Have a talk to the guys on www.clubvr4.org, there's sure to be someone on there that has a bit more experience. I believe the Galant GSR boxes are supposed to be pretty strong, and many have done that conversion in the GSR FWD.

If you go and get a VR4 front cut, get a silver one and I'll have the front bar from it...

Mate I used to know at Uni had a VR4 conversion in his GSR Gallant.
He said his GSR box held out for a while with the stock VR4 motor, but once he started driving it more enthusiastically it started to show signs of wear, and after upping the power on the VR4 motor is soon after packed up shop.

So I think using a stronger box to start off with will save you haslles in the future. :P

Yeah, any other suggestions for a good gearbox that will bolt up?

I know someone that is using a Lancer GSR box locked to FWD in his mirage with a vr4 engine. umm some import mirage cyborg boxes bolt up. But i really wouldnt bother, the VR4 box bolts up fine, no need to customise the engine bay to make it fit, and atleast you know the box was designed for the engine

Well now i know i can use the stock Magna driveshafts, that is going to help heaps! Have you got any pics of your modified engine mount Sogz? I would like to know exactly how you did it to :)

Sogg

ummmm..... u can use one of the stock drivesharfts but u need to have a custom one made for the passenger side... only $190

The mount i didnt do but i will get some pics of it as soon as i can get access to the car

lol, well it was the ultimate rice mobile, hehe, perhaps.

meh, guess youd have to hear the actual soundclip.

sogg, i remember you had the driveshafts altered, but then something happened, then u got the vr4 gearbox, why wouldnt they let you use the astron gbox?

Sogg
11-03-2005, 07:51 AM
Ok, 1. I dont have a venting bov just a aftermarket one that is plumback, the stalling is due to a part called "closed throttle position switch" and it is quite hard to track it down coz whenever i ring mitsubishi they quote me a different part number...

2. My car needed a custom sharft with the stock gearbox, i tried doing a u turn and it popped out because it was too short, then we got a sonarta one, but the problem still occured. u can try for urself maybe u will get lucky

3. they wouldnt let me use the astron box because it is just too weak to cope with the amount of torque the new engine puts out...

good luck with it sogg, hopefully it'll be odne soon, and when you take it the quarter it'll kick some 3rd gen ass :bowrofl:

or u could at least give TM-SE-RED a challenge, as on the offical times list on the forums somewhere, only has TM-SE-RED in the 1st gen list.
