I get that too sometimes it happens other times its fine it seems to be the speed at which you stop at or how slowly or quickly u brake.
Mines not a verada nor a 3.5 but its an auto non the less and it seems to happen to more then a few ppl here. But my auto also has 212,000km on the clock and its still going well with the usual signs of gearbox wear.

sweet im not the only one.. a mate of mine said might be the tps (throttle position switch) but i have no idea it seems strange coz it only started doing it fter going dragging one night so maybe wear??

Does it jolt the car when it happens? When I had the TE the dealer swapped the ECU and it was right.

EIDT: it's not a jolt but you can hear it.
Mine does that too, it's not a huge clunk as such but a (slight) clunk nevertheless.
I put it down to drive train backlash - I found quite a bit of backlash when I had the AWD up a hoist @ friends place and turned the wheels. I was there to see how difficult it was going to DIY change exhaust. It wasn't very hard at all, but Im having second througths because the original one still looks brand new.
As the triptronic takes 1 to 1.5 sec to change after driver command, on downshifts, it may jump 2 or 3 gears if you're quick on the flick.

It might be an issue with the gearbox torque convertor when looking for 1st at very low speeds. My TJ2 AWD drops hard into first on a manual shift doing less than 10kph esp when I'm still coasting and not juicing it. Even worse when I do give it some on a manual kickback, there's a heavy engagement of gears that makes you think about doing it again.
I think the gearboxes are better programmed for forward changing, less so for manual shifts. I think the manual shift mode may try to shift to hard and fast down low to provide a 'sports-like' gearchange. :blah:

Just sounds like you need an auto service, or even just a service. I used to get it and had a service then it was gone  .

My transmission oil was changed 4 mths ago & just before i bought the car & it's still clear so I think I'll have to live with the clunk. Its not that bad and all cars have their particular quirks.
i just put synthetic in it i think is ecu due to my gearbox being off a different car we tried to get the ecu which was from a solara wagon but it didnt work apparently u cant replace verada with magna ecu im outta ideas

I have a 94 Verada KS and it does this too... In the following scenarios :
If im going down the freeway on overdrive, break and come to a set of lights on the of-ramp. As soon as it dips below 30kmh it makes a huge clunking sound just before the car comes to a standstill. It varies in intensity. Some days it does it alot, some not at all. It never happens when the car is off overdrive. Mechanics cant seem to find what causes this. It's been to a transmission workshop and they advised me to take it back to Mitsu and get the base idol re-set. Did this and it helped for a few days then it went back to its old tricks. Apart from this many mechanics say i am lucky as my car is in exceptionally good condition for a verada/magna.
