what you need
ring end spanner (12mm)
timing light

what to do:
start the car...go to ur dizzy and undo the nut holding it in place (passenger side). on the vacuum advance, disconnect the inside vacuum line (closest to the drivers side). hold ur finger over it so there is no vacuum leak and check the timing. it should b about 5 degrees. disconnect the smaller (outer) vacuum line and hold ur finger over that and check the timing. if i remember correctly it should b around 13 degrees. only advance/retard 1 degree at a time or so and take the car for a drive to make sure it's not pinging after each time u advance/retard timing.

to retard and advance:
with ur timing light, check the timing chain cover and the timing markings to see wat ur timing is currently at. a white mark should fly past the markings in a certain position which shows to u wat the timing is at. if u want to retard the timing (take it backwards... less) then youll want to go to the passenger side and move the dizzy away from u slightly (it will slide). only adjust it a tiny bit at a time and recheck the timing at the timing markings. to advance the timing (take it forward... more), slightly slide the dizzy towards u and recheck timing markings.

if u want, u can fill the car with premium unleaded and advance the timing as far forward as possible before it pings... this is tuning the cars timing for premium and it will ping if u try to put unleaded in it with the same settings. tuning it to premium will give u the better fuel economy and slightly more power (1 or 2kw max). if u just put premium fuel into a car that is tuned for normal unleaded petrol, u arent getting better fuel economy or power. u need to tune it for this purpose.

ok hope all that makes sense, its 8am and i just got home from work. started at fkin midnight. anyway, if ya need anymore help just PM me and ill b glad to help out

:stoopid:

Mistu's specifications are:
11-15 degrees BTDC (aka advanced timing) with outer vacuum hose conneced
3-7 degrees BTDC with outer vacuum hose disconnected

So as Brendan said 13 degrees should be right...

You might be pushing it at 15 degrees with ULP... Mine pings at 15 with ULP - worth a try though - just dont let it ping!! You'll hear it if you got it bad - very noticable... but if you dont know what your sound your listening for - then you might not reliase that your car is pinging (and slowly ruining your motor)... so safe to keep well under specification - like around 13

I run bp ultimate - and have it advanced at about 15 degrees comfortably...

Note: If your gonna advance it as much as you can, take into account weather - i advanced mine heaps on a freezing cold day and it was fine... but as soon as a stinking hot day came - it pinged like hell

And to add on to your instructions Brendan: make sure the car is at operating temperature, with lights, aircon, etc switched off (you'll know your car is at operating temp as soon as the fans start kicking in)

Cheers,
Bill

i guess you remove the hose to stop the vacuum advance working... as you want to set the timing without the vacuum unit working...

once again - there is two specs to follow - one with the hose connected, one without...

so you can adjust it without the hose connected (block the hose off though) and then plug the hose back in and see if they both are in specification

is not a dumbass question we all asked questions when we started to be able to learn how to do these things ourselves

You point the light at the botton of where the timing chain is, the mark is actually on the cog. This can be found on the passeneger side of your engine bay, right down the bottom where all the bests are, may be difficult to spot, its right down in there

OK thanks I thought that was the case so I point it at the belt or the cog?

if ur engine isnt completely dirty like mine, ull see a maker near the top of the cog, which should have BTDC 10 closest to u (looking from the front of the car) and T and then ATDC 10 (obviously, ATDC is for more advanced timing)

is not a dumbass question

yes it is! LETS GET HIM!!!

nah jk, u probably shouldn't touch it till you know exactly what your doing or get someone who does to show you. it can result in engine damage and a pretty ****ty running car
