hey just wondering is there any gains to be had from getting vents in the bonnet apart fromn looks ? .......... i was thinking maybe adjust the stock air intake so it lead to a vent on the bonnet and would suck more air in ? .... or maybe put a pod on and a vent right over the top of it ? ........
i dont wanna do it for looks only ........... ill only go ahead with it if it is functional:P

10kW atw gain from a correctly installed vent. Usually if you get 3. A large one going right over where the front exhaust manifold is to vent most of the hot air when stationary and crate a draft when car is in motion. then a small one no closer than 10cm from the back of the first one for the drafted hot air to excape. Then if you wish a small square one over the top of the air box for sucking cold air in.
If you believe that then you have just be ripped off big time. Really it has no measurable performance gain, however it does help with venting hot air which in unmeasurable way will help your engine durabilty and also hopefully keep your air box cooler with less engine bay hot air.
Alternative to this is to use a few washers, stack them up and put them in between the bonnet bracket and the bonnet, so when it's closed the back of the bonnet is raised up and that will let hot air out. Very old school method but works very well.

They are mainly for looks but some do vent heat well if positioned correctly. I was going to build a box around my pod with an open top to seal around the bonnet when closed and have a vent in the bonnet directly over it. Not only would it have looked pretty cool but the induction roar would be mental lol
But then you have problems with rain / water and other things falling into your engine bay and onto your filter etc.

one of my mates has done this to his TH... looks very cool actually! don't know if he's monitored temps or anything tho!

Don't know why but i like the vent they have put on the new monaro, if they had the same on the VRX it would look hot as hell, not sure if they have been put on for looks or what but me likes, to bad the rest of the car looks like crap.
anyone for a photoshop for these vents on a VRX

I plan on turning my stock air box upside down so the filter would be pressed against the bonnet then cutting in a scoop. should have some gain from it id imagine. It would give cooler air, and more of it.
Plus current cold air intake looks crappy.

so if i installed a vent ontop of my filter box and modded to pip to go up instead of to the front of the car this would be good ? .......... then maybe id put another vent in exact other side in opposite position to even it up for looks? ............i think it would look mad ...... but i dont want the imbarrasment of ppl saying "why" and i say "eeeeeeeeeeer.. i dunno it looked good" :P

putting vents right over a pod in a box + heavy rain and parked car = not very good driving ??
you'd need to watch the weather? i talked to a guy at work to day siad vents are fine on EFI cars if its just holes in the bonnet and a scoop is okay.
you'd need to somehow make covers or make it drain somehow ??
im thinking of makeing a scoop with a box and a short ram pod intake thing jsut need to get a day off to get the parts from a wreaker to stuff around with....
plus look for a cheap bonnet... if you put a scoop on you need a road worth in qld...

i've already put on a scoop and made a custom airbox to sit around my carb. have also drilled small holes in the low points (where the water wants to sit) so that the water can drain out. in POURING rain and i mean bucketing down u can drive easily even with a carb.
wen driving in fine conditions, u get very nice intake temps. hell... i can thrash it, pop the bonnet straight away and leave my hand on top of my open air filter for however long i want. it feels COOL to touch. the night air is going straight into my carby and it loves it.

main thing im worried about is rain and bird **** getting on the pod LOL .......if u made the vent further down the bonnet and had the vents aimed at a much more sever angle then no rain or other stuff would get to the pod ........... not to far down though otherwise it would look gay

Well these were my vents....
As far as rain goes... it just runs off the covers onto the exhaust manifold at the front (oh ok I had the engine cover on my car.

Hard to say as I t was part of the complete install/rebuild of that car.
the top skin only of the EVO bonnet I got from SSV in Sydney $330 delivered to Brisbane
did most of the work my self so labour free.. add an extra $100 for all the other bits and pieces to stick it in .. and then a full paint job top and bottom.

TBuTcher,
Have always loved that bonnet with the vents, and have wondered many times what a TJ bonnet would look like with the same Evo transformation performed on it...
photochop anyone?

What about just the small intake vent on a KL AWD Verada? Look stupid? Its pearl white, I really want to do this for CAI and it seems the best way to do it.

this is the white verada TbuTcher is talking about. Thanks thats it.
Yes I like the car in some respects.. but a TJ bonnet does not suit main vents..the lines of the bonnet go through the vents and looks funny.
TE-TH lines are further apart and they look great.. (like mine ;) )
you could always put a TE-TH bonnet on your TJ ... as long as you changed the grill as well (or wait for my newest creation ...coming toa forsale section some time this year :D )

looks crap IMHO. definately needs to be done on a TE-TH bonnet..
if you have a TJ - get a TE-TH bonnet - and a TE-TH Grill. you woudlnt even know.
