View Full Version : Wheels/Tyre advice
Hey everyone,
I just got off the phone with Tempetyres because i definately am overdue for a set of rims to go with my custom paint. I'm probably looking at going for 17's due to the cost of 18 inch tyres. And ive definately got my eyes on a few sets!
I enquired about purchasing a set with better tyres then the ones that come as standard, and not suprising (but thankfully none the less), they told me all i have to do is pay the difference in price between the standards and the tyres i want. The standard Nankangs retail for $130 per tyre. Does anyone have any suggestions on what's a good reliable tyre to get? Since my girlfriend does most of the driving of the car, the tyre first and foremost has to be safe, grippy, etc. Its purely about safety. I'm hoping to get a good tyre for around $200 each.....does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm Not Pretty Sure About Nankang Tyres Coz Their Made In Taiwan.for $130 You Can Get Fulda Or Sava Tyres At Beaurepaires Or Other Tyre Places And Sava Is Made Here.

For $200 probably go for a budget tyre such as Bridgestone G Grid IIIs that are a fairly good all around tyre. $200 is nowhere near enough to buy a good 18" tyre, 17" is fairly easy though.

Kumho 712's, are nice tyres that will cost under $200 each, they are silican tyres and directional. sure theres tyres with more grip but they are very good for the price you pay.

The GIII's came standard on the TJ Sports AWD and I've found them to be pretty good so far. Nice level of grip and not to noisy either. Well worth a look. I was also talking to a friend who uses his car for both road and track and he swears by the Yokohama A539's. I'm not sure about the prices for these but he says they have great grip so these might be worth a look too.

I've heard Nankang make good tyres, hell, everything's made in China or Taiwan nowadays. Anyway, what about the Falken ST115s? They're one of the ones that comply to our notoriously high load ratings.

what state r u in ?
Thanks for the replys people!
Im located in Melbourne. Ive tried going to Factory Direct in Thomastown but they definately seem more expensive the Tempteyres and dont quite have the same range. Im not overly keen on going back to The Tyre Factory in Sunshine as they really stuffed me around last time i went.
But im open to any suggestions.

Yokohamas are a very good tyre.
as mentioned by Steve_N - the A539's are a fantastic tyre, (i have a set on my TH) but they are no longer made. the replacement is the new C-drive. supposed to be a better performance tyre than the A539 (according to the brochure anyway) and are cheaper too.
they are asymmetrical in design, which means that they have to go on the rim a certain way, but are not directional per se. had them on my old Galant and can vouch for the fact that they are a quiet, very grippy, good wearing tyre. they also have a silica compound in them, so they are supposed to be better than an ordinary directional tyre.
in Qld, a 215/60/16 tyre is $145, so 17's would not be much more.
I highly recommend them
