OK well for starters getting an upgraded engine for $3k aint gonna happen, even if it is mitsubishi. turboing a stock engine will cost around the $3k mark with MINIMAL parts. Putting a totally different brand engine would require a ****load of changes which would surely cost far greater than $3k.

new engine in ur magna you would have to go another mitsu engine for $3g's, other engine will require new mounts then the new engine, then engine management, then mating a gearbox to the engine then getting it all engineered so u can drive it on the road
if u want a turbo best bet would be save up more, get another 2.6l and turbo that, if you dont want to (and by the sounds of it you dont want another astron 2) then i'd say take ur car to the wreckers, get some money for it, then save up some more ontop of the 3g's and get urself an import

So when you say NEED new motor, really you just want a faster motor? you dont actually NEED a new motor as such, the old one is still working? I'd say the only feasible option would be to get a turbo. Sourcing cheap 2nd hand parts and doing the labour yourself (or getting a mechanic friend to help for some beer or nachos :P) you could probably do it for around $3k.

sell it and buy ts 3.0L, turboing the astron, i dont think (without more than 3k) it'd go that much faster than my mildly modded ts v6. The 6g72 is a brilliant engine, just watch the valave seals and tappets and lifters, otherwise brilliant, 4k for a stock 15.7 second quater...

if your a mechanic and you can get the parts and machine work done at trade prices then why not rebuild your engine? If you stripped the engine and reassembled it yourself you could have a reco engine in your car for well under $1500 including a new oil pump. then spend the difference on a bomb to drive while your magna is off the road.
A V6 is not a straight swap into a 4cyl body, the engine mount on the LH wheel arch is further forward in a V6.

You did originally say "sell it and buy a TS 3.0L" it was already clear. :)
I was just trying to prevent somone from buying an engine and thinking it will fit their car when it won't.
