View Full Version : RE XXX 18" mounting depth

Hey,

Just wondering what happens if there's not much space between the back of the sub and the enclosure wall? This'll be in a sealed box, and I CAN make it so there's enough room behind the woofer, but I was just wondering... reasonably large mouting depth for this thing, and going in a 2nd gen wagon spare wheel well means I'm going to be losing wagon height. I'm using a fake floor for the entire wagon part and I know the overall enclosure volume I want, but if I can mount the thing closer to the floor on the wheel well then I can use a larger volume box (wider) in the fake floor part of the enclosure and lower the overall losses to the height of my wagon! That all kinda sounds confusing. I'm tired and fibreglassing fumes get to you after a while even WITH precautions. Sorry if it's all rambly.

Wow, awesome sub... I'm hoping you have 10" subs/midbass in your doors to keep up with this??? ;)

You need to have a couple of inches behind your driver. Besides the damaging effects of reflections against the back of your driver for sq, The sub relies on airflow here to cool the coil. If you are going to be running this hard, u'll have to leave some space there.

Consider mounting it on an angle, you can build an angled enclosure for it using a few mdf shapes and glassing makes it solid as a rock.

What amp is driving this?

Peace

18" thats gonna be some low down bass, im with stimulate you would need some smaller subs to match the output from 18" baby wouldnt u? Otherise youll just hear some tinny music with some massive thuds, feel free to correct me if im wrong

lol I sense some sub envy? Let's just say I rolled a LOT of school kids for their lunch money! lol rrp @ sonic nirvana = $1349 for 18". My calcs have been thus:

fs 29.0Hz
Qts 0.59
Qms 5.09
Qes 0.64
Vas 244.2L - 8.62ft3
Xmax 32mm (lol this thing can shift something like 38 cubic METRES of air!! Ever had to shift TWO cubic metres of dirt by yourself? eeek!)
Disp. 7.08L - 0.25ft3

qtc @ 1.2 vb= 2.7481ft3 (77.8175L) f3= 43.4007hz fc= 58.9831hz
qtc @ 1 vb= 4.6049ft (130.396L) f3= 38.6413hz fc= 49.1525hz
qtc @ 0.8 vb= 10.2796ft3 (291.085L) f3= 35.2781hz fc= 39.322hz
qtc @ 0.7 vb= 21.146ft3 (598.788L) f3= 34.7597hz fc= 34.4068hz

I think I'll go with qtc of 0.8. Which means a reasonable size box. Yeah, I think I'll angle it and give it at least 3" gap, hopefully 4" if I can find it. I want the kinda bass that you can't hear, but when you feel it, it's scary. YeeeHAA! oh, AND the bass you CAN hear too.... of course! This should just about do it methinks. It'll possibly be crossed at 60hz with a 12db slope, maybe 18db. not sure. Maybe even 50hz. That'll be decided later while tuning. Amp is zapco reference 1100.1. (still saving for it, but getting close now) End view is to be totally balanced and eq'd throughout entire system. Also going to put a psychoacoustic processor in there. Put some low-end back in ye olde digital music. (why you ask? lol don't even bother.... heh heh heh)

Well... I'm still tossing up what to do for front end. zapco ref 1000.4 is the amp. And I'm going to go a 3 way split. But, what to do, what to do, what to do!!! I love focal 165kps. They SAY that with the 165k3p you get a healthy dose of bass. 60hz? Don't have info handy. But yeah. I'd think they'd be flat down to about 70 - 80 perhaps, and MAYBE 60. So there's gonna be a widdle gap there. What do we think of going a 165k2p, and then say a focal27kx? Would be great, except that's a helluva door pod for an 11" sub. Maybe the 5" sub? Make a proper enclosure for it in the door. Another option. Any suggestions for 8" or 9" drivers of similar excellence that I could put with the focals? Or maybe I should go a morel 'elate 9' 3 way instead? They look pretty decent. Haven't heard any morel stuff, and don't know my chances of doing so in bris. I'm happy with my sub and amp choices, but still deciding on front stage. Rear fill ain't gonna happen.

This'll be a fair while coming together yet guys, so don't get too excited just yet. But I'll sure keep you updated with every new advance. I might even blow the budget and buy a camera to give pics. But for now, just use your imagination. lol And if anyone knows of any 2nd hand zapco, focal, morel or decent eqs etc. Let me know. I keep an eye on CAA. I like new, but hell it's killin me with some of this stuff. Oh, and you don't even WANT to know what I've got planned for deadening. Another thing to save for. Lucky I have no gf to spend money on right? right? no really... lol *sigh* can't live with em, can't live without em. What is it with girls?

I like the Hertz 3 ways... Morel Elate's are really nice. I love morel for their tweets, (Using mt2's as ambients atm. And on the hunt for supremo's at the right price)

You'll need at least 8" midbass in the doors, or 6.5" subs I reckon (Digital Designs)

You could go 10" in AP enclosures but you'd have to give up ur windows or your leg space if you want some big pods for them.

Soz, I don't think the focals will do the XXX justice... If you plan on running that near its potential. (Might have been better off with a 12 or a 15...)

Peace
btw: Ur not meeting the right girls... The good ones buy u stuff :)

yeah, I've held off on buying the focals coz of this point. They're probably good for something a bit less meaty. I REALLY wish I could hear some morels. OR hertz for that matter! What is it you like about hertz? I think 8" midbass would be fine. I can handle that in my doors. How about horns? Does anyone know where I can go in brisbane to hear good stuff like morel, hertz, etc etc etc! I HATE JB, Strathfield, Bris Car sound, GCoast Car sound. Northfield is the only decent place I've found, and even they say they hate stocking this stuff coz it's so hard to sell once they have it. So they're not likely to order em in just so I can demo em! I wish! But yeah, I have no idea where else to go. I'll just keep working on my sub atm, and keep thinking about front as I go. Not wanting to rush and make a bad decision! Stupid brisbane. :( Why can't there be more people into high end audio! lol

The Hertz are known for thier good midbass. Mates got a nice 3 way setup with 8's in the doors. People ask him to turn off the subs so they can hear the fronts, *he turns on the subs.

Morel tweets are unbelievable. Israel knows what they're doing...
Of course you can't go past the dynaudio drivers but will cost you.

I have the Older Hybrids as well, havent had enough time to test the mids against my hertz drivers so couldnt say how they compare.

If you have enough clean power the hertz mids shine... At a fraction of the cost too.

You will need to spend a lot of time deadening your doors if you want any good results. Both sides (inside and outside layer) the door trim itself and also mdf the service holes up.

I reckon ul get sick of the 18". I give it 6 months starting from when u power it up ;)

Don't want ur setup too bass heavy unless ur db dragging imo. Get some pics up of ur progress anyway and prove me wrong... :P

Peace

lol... you think maybe I should go with the 15"? I might just end up doing that yet. I'm not a whole long way into it all yet, so I'm still flexible. I don't like the loud annoying bass either, I really wanted the 18 for the extension down to something like 14-16hz. Stuff you can only feel. Probably wreck the car though, and the power I'd need to really get that, well... I think it'd be a fairly long and rocky road to that goal. Maybe I should curtail my crazy ideas. In the end, I just want a beautiful SQ(L) car to listen to my music in. Everyone asks me, why bother... it's just a car etc. But I just love the numbers, and designs and overcoming the challenges of an audio unfriendly environment.

Where do you mount your ambient tweets? How much difference would you say they'd make?

Yeah, I'll get a camera. All I'm doing at the moment is making a fibreglass wheel well, and starting on a false floor. But that depends on which woofer I use. I have an 18" or 15" available to me, so yeah. I had the 15 in mind first, and was just a crazy idea the other night that led me to the 18. Somehow I have the gut feeling about your 6 month thing. It'd just be a novelty, and a friggin exy one at that. Thanks for the smack upside the head there! ;)

How do you mean inside and out on all the doors? You mean both sides of the door trim? How do I manage to get that under the vinyl and carpet on the interior side of the doors! lol I'll be doing double layers of dynamat extreme for both of the insides of the doors, and yeah, sealing the service holes with at least 1/2" mdf, maybe even bracing the door skins. Floor, roof, doors, bonnet. It's all getting sound treatment, because I just love driving along and hearing basically no road noise. lol Kinda silly I guess, but oh well. I DO have other things to waste my money on, but it'll haunt me forever if I don't indulge it. Why oh why is SQ such an addiction!!!! SPL is so easy in comparison. Anyway, this post is getting off topic! Thanks heaps for the advice so far Tim! 'preciated!

Yeah It is enjoyable, I like trying to get my stupid stage right, it's so degrading when you spend a couple of hundred on home/room audio and the stage height etc is perfect and you need to spend months trying to get anywhere near that in the wheels.

Where do you mount your ambient tweets? How much difference would you say they'd make?

Ambients I've just started playing around with. Funds are tight at the moment so not sure if I can afford them, but nevertheless I'm always a big fan of trying stuff out. I noticed that my stage is centred fairly high anyway. Although the tweets are mounted down low, they are positioned well. I first thought that I would get the rainbow effect, but after changing amps a couple of times from headunit to el cheapo to Alpine v12 and now to soundstream it sounds much better. Surprising how enough power can really lift it. Before the ambients the stage was at the height of the airvents.
Still playing around with them. Gotta get the frequencies right, but I scored some awesome little mounts for them then they sit up on top of the dash.
I wanted to glass up some nice houses for them in the a pillars but cbf... Wanna wait till I hear the results.

I may end up losing them. will have to wait and see.

It is good to go through a lot of equipment. I gather (pray) u didnt pay retail for that. If not as long as ur getting bargains u can usually try it all out see if you fancy it then pass it on.
In all honesty, to keep up with ur sub you will need to go nuts on ur doors. Prob a few thousand more on amps and speakers etc etc. If you have it great... Otherwise the money may be better off spent elsewhere.

The Re xxx 12's are an awesome sub. Also very easy to sell as the market is big for them. They can keep up with 6.5" running off a couple of hundred watts up front.

I meant the inside of the outer shell. The inside of the inner metal and the otherside of the door trim itself. Trims buzz like anything. V annoying. I still gotta get some deadening paint onto mine.
Consider dropping down to a 15". Mind you the best cars in SQ in the world use two 15" s usually. And beyond, so I'm not suggesting for a second that huge subs arent' great for sq. But the cost of getting that extra bit of extension down low involves new altenator, new battery(ies), destroying ur car with trim mods etc. And lotsa money

Peace
