Just changed my water pump and my car seems to be running way to cool, the temp gauge only move around 1/3 needle sits between bottom of the gage and the half way mark is this normal? What are the problems with running to cold?
Where dose your needle sit?

if i understand you correctly,
I..o..I....I
is the 'o' where your temp arm is sitting, if so, that is the ideal spot, well, thats what i try to achieve, running cold isnt so much of a problem as running hot, however if the engine never warms up. parts do wear, cause its like tuning it over first thing in the morning on a really cold day, youd never change gear at 5000 rpm with that, coz its insane.
so for the car its like a bad hangover, lol
but if ure temp guage is like that lil ilustration, then ure fine.

I..o..I....I
Is correct but I was told if it runs cold it causes the oil to turn sludge like and causes poor\ high fuel consumption which i have at the moment. I always thought too cold is better than too hot when is comes to the Astron engine!

Are your gague's reading correctly? You might try the 8v regulator (as posted previously) and see if that makes a difference. Also check your thermostat as outlined in the Gregory's/service manual.
My temp sits around where yours is (after changing my stuffed thermostat to a cooler 160C) when it's on the highway, but idleing and city traffic it goes up to just above the half-way mark.
I was told that the 160C thermostat would make the car run rich and use more fuel, but I haven't noticed any difference from the same sh1tty consumption that I always get.. :P

have you got a reading in degrees? or just going off the gauge? because we all know how good Gen1 gauges are :bowrofl:
buy a 30 multimeter with a k-type thermocouple and connect it to the radiator hose and go for a drive. see how it goes then.

mine use to be just like the other dudes,
then i stuck in the 8v regulator and now my fuel and temp guages look normal
and yes, around the city on a warm day the temp will sit around the middle, but once on the motorway itll go down to about 1/4
my fuel guage is funny tho, as im driving and the body angle shifts from corners and slopes and stuff, the fuel guage moves all over the place. going down hill itll say its almost empty and then on the uphill ill have even more than when its on a flat surface :P
(once just after putting $20 in, it read empty for the next to days of driving, till i got pissed, hit the guage and it worked again lol )

Yeah forgot about the 1st Gen gages being so accurate(NOT) if it's anything like the fuel one it will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off! :D

all the gauges cept fuel are fine. unless someone really screwed the car prior, ive had 6 gauges, long story, and they all read the same temp. when my heat gauge goes to just over the half way mark, so I.....I..o..I then the car spues its guts, and all the lovely puke brown water comes from the resevoir tank.... yes i know its not good, its only done it 2ice since ive owned it and i fixed that quick smart. but the temp is ideal, it seriously is. if the arm never left the left side of the gauge, and it is 100% functional. then id say to you, u have issues, the only way to get that kind of result. is a complete coolant drain, and only have coolant thru the system, no water mix, and the thermo removed.
aka. a good way to not have a car turn over lol

if the thermo install is anything like my old falcon, u leave the ***** out, as it tends to drop from its alignment as u try to fit it and u end up getting that pissed, u got "**** it" :D

Talking about gages when the fuel light comes on how many k's approx are left in the tank???
Aströn Boy

well, that is dependant, but when my car was totally stock, and i had the light on leaving the mechs after it got the rebuilt engine, it got me about 15mins before getting to a petrol station.
when i went on the cruise, first and last, and had the minor exhaust system, lasted me 10mins and then the clug clug sound started up...

think wen the light comes on there are 10L left? isnt this universal in all cars?
atm im having troubles with my instrument cluster....
1. tacho dosent work
2. fuel guage works either wen i a) bang the top of it or b) fill up
3. temp guage works either wen i a) bang on top of it or b) it just works hahahahaha
oh god i love rum
my speedo is the only thing that works and i dun even think its accurate

hmm on the note of fuel economy i just got 29L for 195km...yeooww!! haha sux, highway is good, 10l/100k but yeh, i'm not always on teh highway.
TM my fuel gauge seems to only work for about the first 100km...until i fill up again, even then its still off by the quarter. I was going to try what subby did but i thought if it shows empty after 100km I probably won't bother.

the fuel guage MIGHT be a mixture of both fuel sender and the regulator stuffing, i tested mine with just the regulator first, seemed to do a good enough job :)
my average fuel econ is $10/100km, so i guess thats 10L/100km, not much point in doing an exact, as my heavy foot on take offs, gets compensated by the overdrive at 60kmph n up, or flipping it into neutrel down hills for those fun rollercoaster rides :D

tell me i'm reading this wrong..... you use over drive on just above 60? or do you mean past 60, so like 85ks and up.
i havent touched my overdrive switch in ages, dont really need it with 2650rpm @ 95kph
Terrorsidic
11-03-2005, 08:51 PM
well i normally hit it at 70, but sometimes down a gentle slope itll manage 60kmph with OD on lol
roughly, 65kmph is the slowest

ditto, but ive seen it lower then 1/4 but it said it was 2c outside on my temp display also dont know if u know but astrons run ***in SSHH!T with the temps like 1/2 so sloow and slugish thats why i love cold hills runs so much smoother and louder and faster

on my car when the light starts to fade in and out 150k left once it finally stays on (while on flat ground) around 80-100k depending on how i feel like driving

never worked on a ford have you, rwd > fwd for anything repair related.

Don't state what you don't know. Cause I have worked on a ford, completely stripped one.

then how could you possibly say that a astron would be easier to workon than say a XF or even a AU. tried replacing the timing chain on a AU vs Astron ;)

12-03-2005, 03:33 PM
I prefer astrons to most engine, except 4x4s and mainly cause there jacked up, so everythings arm reach, you barely slouch.
unlike most cars that try and conseal everything for 'show' reasons, the astron just bare everything. nothing concealed or hidden.

im with TC on this one its so much easyer to work on a RWD its not funny...........another let down to magnas
rwds are layed out better we riped out a mates motor in a sigma SO much easyer then when we riped out a magna one, fwds are just to clustered

sigmas are astrons too, just think of removing ur g/box compared to removing a rwd one SO MUCH easyer in a rwd

if your a real skinny bastard (and the engine was cold) you could crawl thru the engine bay in my old XF

You'd need real skinny hands and real skinny tools just to change the alternator & aircon belts on a Astron TN.
Jeez, there's barely enough space to slip THE BELTS thru there. :P
