Definately wouldn't recommend it, as each oil manufacturer uses their own additives and you may get undesirable results from additives conflicting :)

I remember seeing somewhere that it was a regulation in Australia that oils of the same weighting must be able to be used together. So if they're both identical viscosity then they should be able to mix.
It probably won't do any damage in the short term, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Wouldn't recommend mixing different brands with any other fluids either, except wiper water.

The only other thing I'd say is safe to mix different brands of would be power steering fluid/auto trans fluid. As they all have to adhere to the Dexron III specs.

Its ok to mix engine oils - even if they're off different brands and grades - apart of designed so you can top up @ a service station anywhere to keep going.
Mixing Steering Fluid & Gear oils - yes - as long as grade are same.

yes, mixing new engine oils of different brand (&grade), even into engine containing old oil to make up volume is ok, and is routinely done, as long as all oil is changed when it's due.
engine oils don't contain additives that are incompatible - certain industrial gear oils do.
um i wouldnt mix my engine oils..............

hmmmmm.... don't do it if you're uncomfortable. I happen to know what oils can and can't do. if you're living within a metro area it's not too costly to buy 1L cans of same oil to keep everything uniformed.
But think about it, if one changes oil brands/grade, there'll be a degree of mixing of different oils due to the fact that engine oils are meant to adhere to metal so can't totally drain. how many mechanics actually hold a stock of flushing oil for this purpose? How many mechanics do you see place a tag notifying oil brand/grade/spec to ensure uniformity? Guys, it'll be a maintenance nightmare if engine oils are made with additives that kill each other.

engine oil is probably one of the most important things of your car, yet often to be the most neglected. Althought I don't believe in the quality of Mobil or Castrol oil, but yes if you are desperate and need to top up, then as long as they are the same weight, then it's ok. But really why not just do an oil change?!?!?
by the way, if you are doing oil change, PLEASE change oil filter, as that will hold 800mL to 1L of oil in it and that's dirty old oil.
