My timing belt snapped yesterday night after being replaced on Thursday!!!! WTF!!!!!!!
All u can here are pistons hitting valves!!!! So the guys who replaced the belt are gonna fix it all, so what am I looking at damage wise and how much is it gonna cost them? Im just lucky I've got another car at my disposal and it happened around my area.

holy cow.

i think this is the first time we've all heard of a T/B snapping!!! thats crazy!! they have wire to reinforce em! yet - yours was only replaced a few weeks ago!?

crazy!!

well - absolutely worse case senario - bent valves, heads damaged, chipped pistons.... read: whole new top end.

not good at all!!! you sure your belt snapped? they are gonna be copping a fair bit of labour costs with this one~!

i have nfi about car mechanics... but what happens when a magnas timing belt snaps/comes off.. would you notice? like would it go boom? would car stop?

whats the point of the belt?

When your timing belt belt breaks, the camshaft (which is in driven by and is in sync with the crankshaft) will stop spinning. The cam controls the valves that allow fuel/air into the cylinder and exhaust out. Your first problem is your engine won't run anymore. This isn't such a problem.

The big problem comes from the fact that the cam may have (and very likely will) have left several of these valves open. In a SOHC/DOHC engine, when these valves open, they extend into the space normally occupied by the piston when it is at the top of the cylinder. With nothing to close these valves, they will collide with the top of the piston.

Here is an example of what happens when they collide (http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/camshaft-damage.jpg)

I am not a mechanic, this is just my understanding of the issue. Feel free to correct.

this is pretty interesting, because a mate of mine had buggered up his camshaft pulley or something like that, which lead to a broken belt and pulley, but apparently the top end was still okay, so I thought it was a non-interfering engine....

in one sentence - it keeps your engine in sync.

engine not in sync = major problems

you can say that again! i have never heard of anyone, not even someone really distant, whose timing belt has snapped before! those things last pretty long even after their intended 100,000 km's. you gotta go down to the local convenience store to get some lottery tickets dude!

so I thought it was a non-interfering engine....

yeah i was lead to believe this aswell, so there shouldn't be too much damage

If it's a non-interference engine, there will be NO damage (apart from the snapped belt)..

I know a few of the Mitsubishi engines are non-interfering (had a belt snap on my in an Express van, all that happened is that it stalled), but I'm pretty sure I was told by the service guys at a mitsu dealership the Magnas are interfering types. :)

I've never heard of a belt snapping on a Magna, usually when they're way past replacement they jump a tooth or two. Still that's enough to bend valve stems.

My mechanic told me one of the major plusses on the 6G72/74 were that they are a non-interfering engine.

Im pretty certain that they are a non interfering motor. If this is the case and your timing belt does snap, the worst that can happen is that your motor stalls while driving.

I pushed my timing belt past 140,000kms in my 2.4 TE but i wouldn't reccomend doing it lol
