Mazda 929 V6 and other cars have a hold button beside the gearstick in the autos. When turned on it makes the car hold gears till it hits the redline and also prevents down shifts.
There probably wasn't a need for this in a Magna because the change in program with the power/economy button is enough to make the car hold gears when in power mode anyway

OK. The HOLD light that is situated next to the O/D light is only to do with automatic transmissions. When the tranny is being gay eg. something breaks inside, as a safety feature the tranny will HOLD the gears in third as a backup. Its a feature that enables you to basically get some milk and drive to the mechanic to get it fixed.

So, in conclusion: if the HOLD light is on, something is SERIOUSLY wrong. :D

It wont do anything, as far as i'm aware, it'll just chuck your car into neutral until the speed is little enough to shift into R or D

Yes. Unless it's already stuffed, the transmission goes to neutral until the speed is sufficiently slow enough to avoid silly damage. Of course, you could always try Neutral-Reverse-Drive-BANG!
