HI GUYS NEW TO THE FORUM

i just recently bought a 93 tr with 178k trade in from a car yard,i drove it home ok ..seem to run ok it just needed a tune

so i got it a full service.tune/oil..blah blah blah.. and when i drove it home from the mechancs i am gettin to what i have been told is the loose timing chain noise

it doesnt always do it i might drive it and next time i got drive it it will drive perfect..im under the unsumption if it was loose timing chain it would be constant

i have been told differnt things from mechanics but i dont know who to belive as they all want my money

this noise only started since i had the service done on the car ..before that it was fine

maybe they screwed the tune up ....

who know im a mechanical idiot with newer cars(i usually drive 80 model cars)

i'm assuming your car is a 4cyl.

i have seen these engines rattle the timing chain at idle or just above it. a worn chain will be noisy on start up before oil pressure is developed. It will then run quiet while the engine oil is cold and the engine has lots of oil pressure. Once the oil gets hot and thins out (about 30mins of driving) then the timing chain will start to rattle again.
This noise can be worse if the oil level is low or if an oil thinner than the recommended 20w/50 is used.
From experience I think this problem is caused by a combination of worn timing chains/guides and a worn oil pump.

probably you couldnt hear the chain when you bought the car because they used thicker oil than recomended which quitens it down a little. Doesnt fix the problem just makes it easier to sell. Then when you got it servied they replaced the oil with the proper viscosity hence now u can hear the rattle.

you said 178,000 i have a 1996 and i just hit 200 000 and did my timing chain you have to wach out cos if you fu*k the chain you in for a lot of money but if you get a new one befor it is to late you should be right the kit it self is 300 i think and you have to buy the oil pump chain as well as it dose not come in the kit wich is about 25 and laber is the think that kills you . you should be right to drive it when it start to get bader then get it down and you well be right for a nother 200 000
