I need to hook the timing light upto cyclinder 1, which is cyclinder 1 looking at the engine bay from the front?
No.1 cylinder is just behind your harmonic balancer and timing chain. Please if you do not know which is number 1 then why use timing light leave it to somebody with experience.

You mean on the far right passenger side, and I do know how to use it, I just needed to know which the number 1 cyclinder was
yes it is on passenger side the easiest way to remember is back of motor has gearbox bolted to it.

Hey yeah, that does make sense, lol weird, all this time I was just making myself remember the spark leads when I redid them as to which was 1-4, i ended up labelling them left to right, lol woops
should thought of my sigmas engine sideward, same thing

yeah, easiet way to remember is that - or remember the pulleys are on the front of the motor

Ok I've adjusted my timing to around 10 degrees advanced and seems to run much better. What exactley is the advantage\Disadavantage of advancing and retarding the timing?

advanced is smarter than retarted.
sorry to tired to give an answer, basically its just to do with how the car runs, feels sluggish with off timing, with advanced it feels quicker to the mark, plus it doesnt ping as much, but you still cant jump the advance, you have to feel it. or hear it.

u get a more grumble from the exhaust if its retarded,
im guessing but i think retarded gives more torque, and advanced gives more top end and better fuel econ

i was told my timing could be out cos of my crankshaft pullys ****DD so when i get that fixed ill check the timing
