Do you (or anyone elase) know if the TL has the same set up? I would assume it has but I'm not going to start cutting the roof lining to find out.
thanks

Thanks TJ, I was planning on installing these in both my TL and the TurboTF. :)
I'll give mitsubishi a ring tomorrow and find out the part numbers and the cost for buying these new ... least then we'll know what the wreckers should be charging ;)

I'd be interested to fit one of these - if you can get part numbers for the map light and bracket so much the better!

This is very interesting - I was considering about doing the same mod, as I find it hard to read the street directory at night with just the single dome light in the center.

Is it possible to do this in a TH exec?

yes it is.. :)

I know it is cause I did it to mine, a bit of stuffing around but well worth the effort.

How bright are the lights? I've never seen Mitsu ones.. some are really dim though. I've been thinking of mounting some real lighting in my car for night reading.. and finding small black things on the carpet.. :P

There's a 2nd version of these map lights - they have a single narrow lens. I was going to mod it so I could fit a 10mm White Cold Cathode Neon behind it. It'd be bright then!

Lights are quite bright, and angled towrds the driver and front passanger side seats. you can easily not only read melway but find few things around the seats too.
hey you guys! i thought this would be a standard thing ona 3rd gen magna!!
my TM came with front and rear map lights + the huge centre light

There's a diagram of it in the Service manual. I saw it last night, but I'll be dammed if i can find it now! :s That's what's so annoying about the manual...can never find anything in it!
It basically was the same size as the other unit, expect it had a lens down one (long) side of it, with the two buttons on the other side.

Awesome, was the cable already there in the TH or did you have to pull one manually? Also, is it just a line you have to 'tap into' or is there some sort of plug.

I've done this mod on the TS, and that required splicing the existing cable that goes to the centre dome lamp. I'm about to do this on the TH but it would be interesting whether there is already a loom there. However I'm still prepared for any slicing action :)
hey these are cool, ive always wondered y they didnt come with these standard

Are the mounting points there on a TR as well.
[TUFFTR]
30-04-2006, 04:28 PM
Those lights are identical to the 2nd gen ones.
and yes 2nd gens have this mounting point.
I picked up these lights + centre ones with map lights for $20 or something both in excellent condition.
Only difference is i pulled my whole roof lining down to do it, not the smartest idea but eh....i also sound deadedned the roof while i was there...why not:P
Good write up Alan
And yeah for the 2nd gens you just have to tap into the red/white wire.
Thats how i wired up my neons to the door trigger :)

The Tr's had 2 didn't they are they both there ? if they are I will need to pop down to the wreckers and get a set.

I have just been looking in the pdf manual that is for download around the forum and you can see the locatons on page 863 and buy the looks that the other light I am talking about replaced the standard "room lamp". It's also located on page 1204.
[TUFFTR]
30-04-2006, 05:38 PM
i know what your talking about..
inside the veradas and some elites I THINK came the centre light with map lights......alot bigger then the standard one and alot better:)
If one car has the maps, then it will have the middles, just make sure you get everything you can
MagnaAussie

Will do.
So this will use the original mounts that the standard room lamp uses. I thought it was mentioned somewhere it had 2 of these I might be mistaken.
where do you hook up the wires though?
MagnaAussie
30-04-2006, 10:40 PM
Theres a red wire leading to the room lamp just link to that wire.

Ok I went to the wreckers today and got both lamps the front map lights and the room lights with maps lights but you need the brackets as well to put these in so it's back to the wreckers for me.

Are they the same for your model as this is out of a TR/TS magna. If they are I'm more then happy to get it for you if you pay upfront.
Mine cost me $10 for the front and $15 for the middle.
post up a pic please.
I feel like this is the unluckiest state, I rang up all the mitsu wreakers and none have any.
I'm also interested how much they are new. I hope it's not more than $30 cause I just sold a set! Don't forget the bracket. The one I got is marked IMASEN 1158-206. There's no markings on the bracket.
New from mitsu is $300

damm well the wreckers here don't have any TE upwards to wreck yet or there stripped in just a few days by panel shops I reckon but there are plenty of TR/TS magna's.
I just asked them and basically they said $300 for the light, $700 for a new roof lining (like wtf) and $$$$ for the new wiring harness.

Images of the map lights .
Front map light sits between your sunvisors.

Center map light and cabin light in one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/AussieHolden/Image001.jpg
These are out of a TR/TS Magna.
looks like they are the same between gen 2 and gen 3 then, th is getting me some next week.
But I bloody hate my local mitsu ($300) and the wreakers arround here have got squat.
After I get mine, im going to make a step - by - step instuctions.

Cool as there is some cutting of the roof lining involved and the front map light will need some wiring up to the excisting wire tot he centre cabin lights.

I got mine in today got the brackets from the wreckers no charge but offered a EL Ute to me and said no thanks to banged up for my liking :D
the middle was fairly easy but the fron was more tricky and I stuffed the roof lining just a little I cut a little to much off but easy fixed by making a grey plastic trim to hide it.

i know this is old but i put the verada lights and map lights in my ts the other day and when i went to wire the front map lights i spliced into the wire with the white line through it and soldered it on and it didnt work, i then tried the other wire and same thing, maybe the loom i have in buggered or somethin but yeah theres definately power getting through as my interior light works, anyone have this problem when installing it? or ny ideas on how i could fix it?
Auximenies
03-08-2006, 02:32 PM
Theres a red wire leading to the room lamp just link to that wire.
Surely then the map lights would only work when the doors are open then? Or am I totally confused about car wiring :/ which wouldn't surprise me that much really...
-Dave
Your totally confused, the red wire has a constant source of power.
Auximenies
03-08-2006, 02:54 PM
so then how does the interior light wiring work then? If it has constant power from both +ve and -ve, OR is the chassy voltage not applied directly to the light housing like its insulated or something and it works via the door open / close switches?
OR am I waaaayyy off yet again?

I did it on my TE last week
There are three connections
The earth comes from when you screw the unit in,
The positive when the door is open comes from one red wire (interior light)
And the positive all the time is the other red one (map lights)
On of the red wires has a white stripe on it
The two wires should pass the mounting point just splice them and connect the plug for the pack of the unit.
I got Two dash tweeters and the map/interior light console all for $50
[TUFFTR]
03-08-2006, 02:57 PM
it gets power from the red wire, and then is earthed through the chassis :D
With the middle interior light (one with the maps) you just connect the wires that were going to the old one, to this new one.
Ill PM you tonight and tell you what i know about installing them

so the front map lights are connected to the plain red wire, not the one with the white line through it?
