Hey I was having problems with the car on the way back from the dyno run, a mate and I had a look at it and ended up taking off the timing belt cover to find out the second balance shaft belt had crapped itself totally sheding itself of the teeth, so I thought what the heck the job is half done for a balance shaft disable so I cut the belt and put the covers back on.
What can I say, the car does have more low end and middle torque, I guess ole pines was right and his engineer friend, the thing I dont understand is I have no more vibration, which I should considering that it is supposed to stop it, but there is still one more balance shaft in there like all small 4cyl cars so the car is still smooth, I would have hoped for a bit more vibration but none.
It feels good to excellerate now. :D

Thanks Pines.

BTW this is not ment for the V6 crowd.

Let us know how you go cliff, like i said i've been considering cutting mine for a long while and several mechanics and one engineer i've spoken to agree its perfectly safe to do.

I just dont get why they'd put it there if they arent needed?

its not like theres a law about them having to be there.

Since my dads kr has pretty much kicked the bucket (overdives vanished) i mite see into doing that to it.

Smaller four cylinder motors have one balance shaft to offset the vibes of the overhead cam, they dont have two balance shafts, only BIG FOUR CYLINDER motors have two on them, one to the front of the motor and one to the back, and on the 4G64 2.4L motor it is an absolute breeze to disconect it, it runs a small belt off of the main pulley with one pretensioner to the rear balance shaft, just cut the belt and hey presto, your still running the front balance shaft cause that runs off of the main cam belt, and is close to impossible to disable, the rear one would be impossible to disable too if it was connected to the same belt, but as luck would have it it is not.

If you do some research you will find there never was balance shafts at all, and mitsubishi thought of the idea of running a second one on the bigger four cylinder motors simply for NVH levels, the simple fact is with this motor it is laughable how easy it is to disable it, it is like someone at mitsubishi was smiling on us poor 2.4L owners and said I'll give em an easy way of more horsepower if they want it.

The balance shafts dont connect to anything, there role in life is to spin at double the rpm of the motor in the opposite direction to offset cam vibes, but I think mitsu being mitsu they thought they would go the overkill and put in two to make it ultra smooth or sumfin.

Yeah, dad's 2.6 astron has two. And my car doesn't appear to have one, so I don't think that's where the power is coming from. :)

Welcome back Pines, you went underground for a while.
I once had a 2.6L with the two ballance shafts. Their main effect would be reduce vibration at the high rev end and have little use at low to mid revs. They were put on the 2.6 motor because 2.4L is about the practical capacity limit for a 4-pot, without having some sort of vibration control.

so you reckon its safe to take the smaller one off a 2.6 astron?
