Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has changed the backlights for the aircon dials etc on a 3gen?
Ive got the white/red dash and my HU has a red backlight, and the aircon stuff looks out of place and I hate the pale colour. Can I just get replacment globes? Then everything will be nicely colour coded! :D
Cheers
Pete
do a search :P
Well, there are a few ways of doing this. You can either go and buy rubber condom things that go over the globes, but they make your dash look all dark n stuff. Secondly you can change them out and put LEDs in, but this doesn't have the same effect as light bulbs, so you'll get bright and dark areas, meaning it will look a bit dodgey.
I wanted to do this...but gave up coz it was too much effort. I think you can get coloured light bulbs? I dunno. :doubt:

If they're just clear light blubs, you could try buying some Tamiya "X" bottles of model paint which comes in clear colours - red, yellow, blue, green.

I'd go the 'condom' things or I think 'Jaycar' do coloured bulbs, does anyone know anymore about this because I think the gen 3 dash would look so much better at night with all soft green back lighting including the instruments, with coloured bulbs or bulb 'condoms' this would surely be achievable albeit with some effort.

ive had the bulbs in my gauge cluster in the dash. the existing white bulbs actually HAVE the condom style covers on them already, they give off a slight green colour. I bought CHEAP A** blue bulbs from supercheap auto and got my mechanic to install them for me when i took the car for a service one day. cost about $40 to install and i needed 4 bulbs they cost me $4. 2 packs of 2 bulbs = $2 each pack
Overall they look OK. not as good as i hoped. I am saving for a replacement dial cluster the white with the blue illumination. but it does the job for now.
i'll try get some pics for you to see. it's worth it as a CHEAP way to get a different dash colour.
BTW those bulbs im told will also work with the AC dash section. I'm thinking of that atm. not sure.
hope this helps :)

You can change the colour using superbright LEDs as a replacement they produce more light at about 3v than the stock globe does at 12v. however veiwable angle is about 30 degrees they need a current limiting resistor and cost around $5 each.

Not when you work in Electronics!! I get wholesale! :D
I thought of LEDs, but reading other threads with the instrument cluster, people had patchy bright bits, which I dont want...
Thanks for the help so far!
Pete
P.S. jpeg... was it my setup you wanted photos for??

I replaced the globes in my motorbikes instrument cluster with leds and its just a matter of setting them up correctly ie light focus. But for an aircon switch it is enclosed so you would have no problems and would be bright as with a 15000mCd LED

Not as far as I can see, my TJ myo2 is an off white colour, when I said green, I meant green like VT/VX commodore, the commodore does not rely on coloured bulbs, rather the skin is already coloured in green so it is uniform, I have an old VT cluster skin and you can hold it up to the bedroom light and see all the different pretty colours evenly, the better illuminated dash cluster is where the superiority the VT has over the Magna ends though.

I put those little rubber condoms over my air-con dial lights. came up a treat, wasn't too dark. However, as anyone who has tried to get at those lights, its an absolute biatch to get at them.
