I can't find a thread dealing with this specifically, so appologies if there's already one out there...

Is anyone out there with 18" rims actually running tyres with a load index of 94? If so, what tyre are you using? The cheapest I can find in this configuration is a Michellin 235/40-18 priced at $391 each, which is insane (probably a bloody good tyre though!).

A dude at one of the tyre places I called said you can trade off load index points for an increased speed rating (i.e. go from LI 94 -> LI 91 and increase speed H -> speed W) but I'm not sure if he was just trying to flog me a set of tyres.

I've been hunting around the net for a copy of the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia's Standards Manual but it doesn't look like the TRAA is online.

Basically, what are other people doing?

That's wrong. An insurer won't care if that's what you've been told, done or decided.

Yeah, I saw those the other day. But 245 rubber is even more expensive than 235 from what I've been told, and their 235 is only rated at 91, same as most tyres. :(

That's pretty much what I thought.. which is why if I could track down a copy of the Standards Manual I could find out if he was talking crap lol

Dude. Shouldn't your car have a 94 rating? It's a VR-X with 17 x 7's and came with Bridgestone 94 rated 225/50R17's.

Definately. Most of them are 97.

Where did you get this info from? Their size is useless.

I've got the 235/45R17's and they're awesome in the dry when new. Obviously as they get older they loose stickiness. In the wet they aren't that great, even with the huge channels down the middle. Be warned they are noisy

Thanks for the info. It's not so much that there aren't options, it's just that most manufacturers don't have a compatible tyre that is priced on the friendly side of $400. I'll chase up those Falkens though... I like the sound of them better than the NanKangs.

what do you mean their size is useless?

i wouldn't buy zeix again,ok in the dry, hopeless in the wet and that noisy i thought a bearing was gone in the rear! i now have the st115's and their the best tyre i've ever owned. grip is crazy in the wet and dry and so smooth and quiet! 10/10 for a fairly cheap performance tyre($250 each,225/40zr17)

whast the story wit these ratings ?
is it just they can carry more weight before bursting or wot ?

what do we need for tj's, and is a higher number or lower number then wot we need better ?

check out Federal's www.federaltyres.com.au i think.

had a ****house name, but their new products are taking off madly !

ive got the s595's. Ultra high performance tyre !
they are quite soft, so they grip up extremely well.
in the wet, they are, well.....almost like im running tank tracks instead of tyres !
had em since december, and i can hardly notice any wear at all, the rears still have a few of those nipplely things on em !!!

Pretty much. The load rating relates directly to load bearing/weight capacity.

Look on your tyre placcard. Mine says I need a load rating of no less than 94. Earlier 3rd gens required 95.

The higher the number the better.

The 16" Yokohamas I just bought (couldn't afford the 18's in the end) have a rating of 100  but that's cos they have an aspect ratio of 65. The smaller the side wall the harder it is to get a high load bearing tyre at a reasonable price.

The higher the number the better.
From a loading point of view. Worse from an owner who wants a better wheel / tyre combo. Mitsubishi have always had rediculous ratings on their cars.

Only the Series II VRX's came with 17x7, before then it was the same 16's that you see on the TJ Sports. I imagine that Mitsubishi had the same problem we have in trying to find a tyre to fit a 17x7 and so just 'cheated' to get the 94 load rated tyres on. In essence the Series I VRX (and Sports) are the same car as their Series II counterpart.
Talk about changing the rules to suit yourself

Yeah, they did that before with some TE's when tyre supplies for the tyre of choice at the time were limited. Blake had the 17 x 7's.

Just looke in the local paper and saw an add for TTF

and the prices speak for themselves

18" tyre wheel combo $689
19" tyre wheel combo $999
20" tyre wheel combo $1199

This would most likely include very very **** tyres. But beggers cant be choosers.
Also load rating would prob be very low too.

that sounds nice, i was looking at a set of 18x7s which would need a 225 wide tyre, which is pretty hard to find in a 18" with 45 profile! i'm gonna estimate being michelin's they'd be over $400 each

I was originally looking at 19" HP Designs but i'm trying not to move to far away from the original look of the Ralliart so the 18x7.5 Enkei BXM2 (with the Michellin rubber I posted above) might be the go, very similar to the standard rims on the ralliart same running diameter just less tyre and more rim.

Chances are only the VR-X and Ralliarts can have them fitted.

you know its illegal to fit 235 tyres to 7" wide rims?

i found a few 18x7's to keep my insurance company happy but there are no tyres with a 94+ load rating that are legal..........

catch 22, sux balls. had to settle for 17x7's. once i'm rating 1 i might go to a different insurance company and get some big wheels, but at the moment i'm paying $370 full comp so 17's are fine :)
