View Full Version : People video taping speedo whilst accelerating

Discussion: I have seen some examples of people video taping their speedometer as they accelerate mostly as Mpegs on a DVD which a friend lent me, it seems to be a trend lately as well as a pretty accurate indicator of actually how quick their car goes (0-100kph etc) and along with the sound of the engine it really puts you (the computer viewer) into the driver's seat, you can actually record the acceleration times with a stop watch and get a reasonable indication of the car's acceleration times allowing for speedo error.
But I think that if people are going to do it they should use common sense (which most probably do) they should have someone else hold the camera whilst driving or alternatively fix the camera in place securely and also abide by the laws and/or do it on a track, I've even seen one done at night with the instrument lit up which was effective and turned out well which I believe was on a track, has anyone else seen these clips anywhere? I think it's popular in Europe on the Autobahns.

Another issue is if caught by the police it may attract the same fine as a person caught operating a mobile phone, if anyone does it please don't drive and hold the camera with one hand or break laws on public roads (especially people reading this thread who get ideas from it, a timeslip from a drag strip beats a fatal accident or a traffic fine anyday)
I saw one driven at night and taken to full top speed over 120mph (it was American) the driver was apparently driving that fast at night whilst holding the video camera.....death wish

i didn't post this :P

Just took a screenshot from the video.

I don't recommend anyone doing this though, we did this when we were stupid 4 years ago, now I see the deadly implications that could have happened.

If you're good at DIY you can get some aluminium square tubing and drill it so its fixed by your 4 headrest posts across the 2 seats. Then drill a centre hole and fit either a suitable bolt that suits your camera or better still, a ball-joint camera mount.

Or for more $$ you can get mini wireless cameras size of a matchbox; the camcorder & receiver can sit safely on your seat.

Those cameras can even be mounted outside the car - makes for very innovative filming! I have gone down the freeway at 100(ish) with the camera gaffataped on the glass.

At least you are doing it properly and driving with both hands, the outside camera angle would be good viewing, I didn't want to sound like a cop or anything in this thread but I don't want to be responsible for putting the idea into some young guy's head (by starting this thread) and having him kill himself. I think that 0-100km runs are the best they can be done on a highway of that speed limit rather than people taking the speedo needle of the clock which is too dangerous, I personally find the 0-100kph clips the more entertaining anyway especially with the sound turned up.

My plan is to use a couple of pinhole or similar sized cameras, have one mounted on the rear vision mirror, and a couple on the front bumper bar and one facing the back windscreen. I was going to just tap the speedo and tacho signals directly and record/store them digitally. I can make things even more complicated and run each camera feed and digital signal feed and synchronise them to an SMTPE clock :P

You sound like some hi-tech wizard, I have enough trouble using my video camera at weddings.

haha, well I do quite a bit of sound production work, which does have some relation to video concepts :D

Why not just rig your car with multiple cameras and full telemetry, Bathurst-style, and feed the whole thing live to a web site? That'd rock!

you could strap a digital camera behind the steering wheel couldn't you and get a half decent video on that...?

i might do it on the freeway sometime, knowing me i wont drive at a time where there will be no cars for a while and not do it

When this thread started i had one of my friends in mind. He video'd his car clicking over to 100,000 mind you i think he was doing something like 160 and about 7grand? correct me if i am wrong cam.... lOL. Its very early and Bekkys brain isnt quite upto speed yet...

But yeah it seems as though the camera in the steering wheel works alright, and you can still have both hands on the steering wheel.

I have never taped my speedo but my car has been taped. my friend took my car from a party when i was drunk and throwing up out the back took it for a drive round yankalilla (worst town in the state) and got clocked by the cops doing 243km/h down yank straight which is a 60km/h zone. Lucky he didnt crash but know he is enjoying a short time of his liscence.....5 years.

i did 180 in a commodore on a proper race track, thats would have to be the fastest ive gone before. The car was actually surprisingly stable at those speeds.. but geez ya have to keep the steering wheel still.. white knuckle stuff

I've got a video of a mate's 2003 pulsar speedo while i was driving on my computer here somewhere - i think we were driving on a bitumein road on another mates property - it was quite a while ago - i think we clocked her up to 210... scary in a little car... when i find it, i'll put it up for yas to look at... (before anyone has a go at me - yes i know i was silly when i done it but it was an experience...)

My R31 Silhouette speedo only went to 200... and I passed that by another 800 or so rpm, and still had about 800rpm to go till the red line... so I dont know what I ended up reaching.
Anything over 200 is plain scary though. If anything went wrong, you cant do a damn thing apart from screeeeaaaBANG!!!
Never again though, was a dumb thing to do, specially with 2 other mates in the car.

we wern't street racing, we were out in country (out of all places probably the dangerous of them all) :P

It was bloody hard to get to 212 on the Commodore (VT auto 3.8 exec) which suprised me.

guys

the problem with filming your speedo is if the cops catch you & they see a video camera in the car they can use it against you

I've been a passenger in a few HSV's that have been running around the 250-260kmh mark. That is some genuinely scarey sh*t, especially down the middle of a public road. Wouldn't have felt too safe if the driver was trying to juggle around a video camera at the time as well.

Love those climate control set ups on the newer magnas, wonder how hard to fit to an earlier TH or TJ? Probably need wiring loom and various sensors etc. Sorry for being a bit off topic

Then there was the Japanese Ferrari Club president that got his passenger to video him doing almost 200 Mph (that's an "M" not a "K"). The video moved from his face to the speedo to the road and back and so on. Then he posted it on the 'net!!!

Perfect evidence for the cops who threw the whole pronting press at him :bowrofl:

Yes I think I saw that on TV, I think it was 'World's worst drivers' or something, it was on a freeway with a fair bit of traffic sharing the road, a bit silly.
In Japan I think there is a 280kph club and they race at night (after midnight) they are mostly turbo RX7's, Supras, WRX's and a couple of Ferraris or Porsche's which just keep up, I saw an article on them in a fast 4's and rotaries mag.
