Hi all,
Going shopping for a new headunit and speakers tomorrow, nothing flash, just non-crappy. My original plan was basically to get the same as in my last car, because I was pretty happy with that setup, ie:-
Pioneer DEH-4650 Head unit
Pioneer TS-A6960 6x9 3-way
Kenwood 4" somethings.
So obviously being a TH I need 6" fronts, and thinking the TS-A1670 3-ways. Then I notice they have 6" 4-ways. Presumably dearer - worth the money or no?
Same situation out the back. The guy quotes me on TS-A6961, then suggests I go for the TS-A6980 4-ways. Worth the extra cost over the basic 3-ways?
Sorry for the ramblings oh and before anyone asks, no, no subs and no amps are on the agenda. :)

I would suggest totally different brands because the Japanese ones you have listed tend to sound a little too 'artificial' for my tastes. I'll elaborate if you want me to. :)

in my opinion, i believe that the 3-way, 4-way, 5...... thing is just a gimmick, your just putting more crap in front of the speaker, blocking half the sound.
2-way should be fine, but i would try to get splits :)
anyway, just my 2 cents

Thanks, but the question was really more about 3-way v. 4-way :)

Agreed, but I think that would push me way beyond my self-imposed budget...

You will probably not notice any difference between cheapish 2 ways and cheapish 5+ ways.
If u have to buy coaxials then many two ways will outshine the 3 and 4 ways because a lot of the time 4 ways don't even plug in their super tweeters, its just there for looks.
You would be better off judging them on their sound quality. Even power handling figures are irrelevent when running off ur headunit as your headunit will put out ~20w rms.
Generally you get what you pay for.
What music do u listen to?
Peace

Thanks Tim, I shoulda known I could count on you for a sensible, well-informed answer. :)
What music do u listen to?
Varies a great deal, I listen to a lot of balad sort of stuff where delicate notes need to be well reproduced, but at the same time I also listen to hard rock where you need strong bass. Not really a doof-doof kinda guy, though. :)
I'm thinking I'll probably go with the basic 2- or 3-way 6x9s for the rear, and that way I can help to convince myself to go for the 6" splits in the front instead of basic units.
Thanks for the help.

I say stick with the stockies for now. Beats wasting money on cheap stuff. The stock gear isn't "that" bad. Save up some money, do some research on nice splits and find something second hand.
Mb Quartz, Morel, Dynaudio, Diamond, Focal etc. Have a listen to them if you can. (All great for detailed music. The Mb Quartz would be the cheapest out of them)
Even though they might be out of your price range, it will let you see the difference between good stuff and cheaper stuff.
I take it you already have the 6x9's?

Thanks Tim.
Funny you should mention MB Quartz. I was standing in JB's earlier today and a guy from AMC (can't remember your name, hi, if you're watching!) who strongly recommended I go for MBQ instead of Pioneer. I told him I was wary of buying brands I'd never heard of. Not sure of the price difference though, I got sick of waiting and walked out. No, I don't have the 6x9s yet either. The whole setup is factory stock at the moment (including radio casette H/U, ughh) and I was planning on buying the whole deal today.

ah kool we can still save you then :)
Forget the new 6x9's...
The stock ones are fine. Put all ur focus into the fronts. Even off the headunit, 2 great speakers and some cheap rear fill will sound so much better than 4 cheap speakers.
What ever u were going to spend on the rears put into buying some front splits.
And check out www.caraudioaustralia.com
Don't ever buy retail. You can get $1000 splits there for $250. Second hand but speakers will last forever if treated well. Most people on the site upgrade their gear every year to 2 years (Including me :( )
So there's always a bargain

hehe, yay me :)
Sounds like a plan. Might even save another couple of hundred and install it myself ;)
Not sure I would be happy buying second hand speakers though...seems sorta dodgy..

Yeah in reality they are never seen and they will last for years.
Some people have problems with warranties but in the end most audio companies will say you over powered them or drove a clipped signal into them voiding any warranty.
Each to their own.

mmm yes
buying second hand of caa is tops
the only thing in my car now that ive purchased new is the headunit, and im running focal splits, 2 big kenwood monoblock amps, and 2x RF HE2 subs.
all purchased second hand at major fractions of the new price.
also, if you want value for money, have a look at the jaycar brand of speakers.
but back on topic, 4ways, and even a lot of the time 3 ways are just a gimmick.
give me a nice set of coaxials any day !
