Hi all,
For a basic cheapish setup (4x50W H/U, 6x9 rears, 6" fronts) can you get away with the factory speaker wiring, or is it still necessary to run new larger gauge wire?

should be right, alotta people reckon its worth replacing, but the difference isnt all that great.
your not running an amp so the wire should be able to handle it aswell.

I say stick with the factory wire until u upgrade to an amp to run them.
If you are going to upgrade anyway just do the lot now.
Solder ur connections too.

Ok, thanks guys. What about the main power to the H/U? Is factory good enough?

Factory power wire is fine,
Factory ground can have problems.
If so: symptons can involve h/u shutting down and flicking on and off, or engine whine.
You can ground ur unit into one of the screws in the dash. Or sand back some metal somewhere. Try it first.
My factory ground was crap, I just went into the screws in the frame.

Factory power wire is fine
Thanks. Last time I did my own install was a few years ago, in an '85 Corolla. The H/U wouldn't even stay powered up on the factory power lead.

yeah, if u find that the power wire doesn't work for u, then feed one of your own!
i like stinger, thats why i spent a lot of money on 12gauge speaker wire....damn it was a waste of money   nobody can see it anyway

Yeah just go cheap speaker wire, dont beleive anyone that ever tells you they can hear a difference between wires ;)
I get most of my speaker wire from Jaycar and get the biggest stuff they have for my woofers, already had some spare Monster cable around for subs and had some spare Reference stuff around for tweets.
The reference cable costs a fortune. And I can't hear the difference (all in ur head most of the time)
Spend more time/effort/money where it counts.
Peace
Tim
Hell, i think i just won't hide all my wiring, so ppl can see it stinger

Tim, be careful throwing this comment around mate. You'll cop a lot of flack from home theatre people when saying this. The difference between cables can be very noticeable at times while at other times it is not. Everyone has a different opinion.
Now moving along to car audio speaker cable; the main two differences that separate the better quality from the lesser is current carrying ability (ie number of strands due to electricity traveling along the surface of copper rather than through it) and the jacket extrusion consistiency. ;)

In a car environment running splits under $1k I don't see the point.
RCA's on the other hand have obvious problems and shielding is very important.
Upgrading speaker wires from stock is one thing. Spending hundreds to thousands on magical gold/silver/diamond/blood of christ wires... I will never see any sense out of.
Just be sensible with it. If you're running hundreds of watts through go some thick stuff. Just don't get too sucked into all the bull. As long as it's safe and installed well. There won't be a problem. No one here has $30k + sound systems (fhrx???;)) so I don't think it is an issue here.
If you are after sound quality another easy way to get good results is to mirror the sides. Equal length cables everywhere. Anything you do to one side do to the other.
But for anyone here that is going to blow the budget on exxy wires, it is pointless if you dont have everything else right in the system.
Peace
Tim
hehe, well seeing as you mentioned it my system is $32k and there is a member on here with a 40k system too just quietly. ;)

You would be far better off spending the money on sound proofing/deadening before you spend a lot of speaker wire.
Well that is true, sound deadening is worth its weight in gold. :)
