Im looking at buying an automatic Magna V6 (1993)

Im a qualified mechanic (no longer practicing) and have not really had much experience with "new" stuff (after about mid to late 1980's)

As this is a dedicated magna forum, Im certain that there would be many with more "recent" experience to share with me, so can anyone please tell me any specific issues or problems to look for, rust, mechanical etc etc

Thanks,
looking forward to replys 8D

:bowrofl: only thing i would suggest is getting the auto transmission looked at as they tend
to be rather Pricey..

They dont tend to have any real bad rust problems, just check out the usual spots where water resides, around the window seals, boot lid etc.

Check CV's, make sure they're not clunking, gear changes are smooth.

i know very little about the V6 but I have had a lot to do with TR 4cyls.

Rust is rare in TR/S magnas but I have seen it in some around the windscreen, around the taillights and around the weld seams under the boot seal on the sedan body.
dropped rooflinings are common as are loose door seal rubbers.
broken inside door handles are common
worn front struts are common but the rest of the front end is pretty strong
Broken engine mounts are common, especially the rear one you can't easily see
common to both the 4 and 6 cyl are problems with idle speed control motors and lifter noise

as Mitsumaniac suggested be wary of dodgy autos in Magnas. not kicking down, delays or flaring of shifts and also delays in gearbox reaction to the o/d button (normal is under 1sec) or sometimes no responce from the box when the o/d button is used are common signs of problems in old magna autos.

Engine wise, depending on mialage,

Welsch plugs,
Valve stem seals
Oil seals such as cam, front and rear main
Leaking sump and rocker gaskets

These are the main points of wear, they are not so mcuh common problems as such as are only wear.
