Use them as long as you're comfortable driving on them. :P

Worn shocks will reduce roadholding and increase braking distances.

I'm pretty picky on stuff like tyres & suspension and yeah, have
heard of the "50,000km" shocker life rumour. But hey, to keep it
Mitsu we've done 200,000 on a TN owned since new and we've
never changed the shocks - they work as good as delivery day.

I've had my car for 4 years almost, and still driving on stock shocks. Even though i lowered the car. Got KYB shocks on the way here, but will not swap them immediately. And my standard shocks are still good.

lowering a car on standard shocks does decrease their life, but if they were fine when lowered then you should get enough time out of them to save for new shocks

don't need spring compressor. Spring clamps will do the job well enough. we can send a set up with the springs if you want. :)

Usually shocks are fine for about 80,000km on stock height without much problem. anything over 100,000km then you are doing well. If you lower your car, then obviously it will be less.

easiest way to tell if you shocks are dead.... when cornering you get unusually more bodyroll. When going through a few long bumps, your car goes up more than it squats. This is what we call trampolining. This means your shocks are not pulling you back down.

Alternatively when your shocks are out. give it a push or pull, if it doesn't return to how it was, and instead just stays at the place you left it, then it's dead. I have seen way too many cars when I push the shock down, it stays down (when it's out of the car).

my old man's verada clocked 350k with original shocks and springs in it, and they were still going strong when he got rid of it. But it had a pretty sedate life.

get sports struts at least you will love yourself for it, well worth the $500, body roll will become a thing of the past. i couldnt handle the stock struts on lowered springs just didnt handle as good as it should of. I recommend pedders sports ridder suspension from experience its the go improves the cars handling remarkably.
theres my 10c worth

My original Konis have started clunking at 75,000km. I think they're re-buildable so I'm about to find out how much.

Kinda

if they are gas then you can add more oil to the bottom of them to condence the gas more and make there dampening harder. yuo need to weld on a grease nipple or a valve which will really hold in gas and liquid. and be a good welder. i helped a mate do his once thats how i know.

My originals in the AWD are starting to clunk & its only done 55k. However, missus mx-5 has done 165k and is still rock solid. I think mazda puts Bilsteins in the mx-5.

My 2000 TJ has done 60k with stock shocks still and now it's starting to bounce around more. It's 40mm lowered of course. Seems to want to understeer a bit too - and I have a whiteline rear bar & strut brace too.

Speaking of which, With 5 people in the car, I've managed to bottom out and my sway bar has hit the control-arm(?) bar that goes to the wheel hub too.

That's pretty disappointing. Koni make a big deal about how their shocks last a lifetime and should outlast the car they're in. I wonder if they're faulty?

hee hee, u said nipple

u think its worth the efford and the DIY-stuff ups? Costs?

Stuff it...i don't care if i bounce around :doubt:

I spoke to the dealership about getting them fixed/replaced under warranty but it's considered "wear and tear" so no go. If they had shat themselves, ie oil leaking out, they would replace them.

What's a bet rebuilding them costs as much as new shocks??

this wasn't for road use, i wouldn't really suggest it for legality reasons.

worked great for a few track days and is still strong

I've got 184,000 out of mine, but that involves us travelling at rather high speeds on gravel, and not necessarily in a straight line... ;)

I do need to replace them very soonish. It won't be with the engine rebuild, as the car is driveable, and I can't afford to at present, however, as long as you pay heed, and it's laden...

The other day i finally replaced my from shockers on my TM... 286600 on the clock - and these shocker have had it (not to mention the bumpstops)

my old shockers you push the piston rod in, and it stays in... and you hear the oil moving around in them

I'm loving these new Monroe GT Gas shockers... i can go over spoondrains without bottoming out, and feel like I can brake in time.
