Hi,

I have this annoying loud ticking noise comming from the engine of my 94 TS 4cyl. when I start her up on cold in the morning. It only does when engine is not warmed up yet. It sounds like the lifters are working overtime for about 5-10 minutes intil the engine gets warmed up. I live in Queensland and we do not get low ambient temperatures in the morning for the lifters to be pumping up that much for that long and making all that noise really. :doubt: I have 120.000 on the clock and wonder if it's the oil thickness ( Magnatec 10w 40) or the fact that I have shut valve stem seals that this is happening for. Would shut stem seals make the lifters malfunction?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
:)

I now have this to, havent for ages, then drove it the other day, soon as i started it, the engine was a tapping to be let out.
simply need the tappets adjusted. I had new oil put in ages ago, like 6 months, and cant remember what it was, but slightly thicker, this did help, but you need to get the tappets adjusted.
easy fix, just annyoing to have...

10w40 is way to thin for the astron, i used to own 1 less than a year ago, and i had to move up in oil grade not down, so if you want your car to last andother 30-50 k's, you better try at least 20w50, or i would recommend 25w60. i dunno about ur noise though, my astron had done 180km with no problems in the block, good luck

My TR has been ticking for the past 14 years man. Its the fanbelts until they warm up.

All the Astron 2's I've heard in my life 'tick' in the morning
tick, tick,tick, tick,tick, tick,tick, tick, :D

EDIT - Its not so loud though, to hear it from inside the car very much.

mine used to tick at start up and then eventually ticked all the time, until i replaced the tappets/lash adjusters and its all quiet now all the time. And i agree that 10w40 is too thin for the old 4's, mitsu recomends 20w50 which is needed for older engines that are wearing. I basically had an engine reco about a year or so ago and run a 15w40 which ive found runs really smooth.

Thanks guys,

Yeah I replaced the oil with some Valvoline full syn 10w 50 (the cheapest full syn I could find - $45) and I must say the ticking is much shorter now and quiter and is actually going away more and more each day. Hope it will be the same when the oil is at 5000 k as well :bowrofl:

Eventually I'll need to replace the teppets I know and I'll do it when I have the valve stem seals replaced. Shouldn't be too bad. Whatever you do guys don't buy Castrol oil. The Magnatec i put in was nothing but trouble, the engine started tapping like crazy as soon as I put it in. No wonder it's actually made of crappy Shell wax as I found out doing a search on oils.

Thanks again.
