Hi guys,

just wondering if anyone else has this problem (thats if it is)
Anyway i noticed that if i drive around 40-50km/h over those recurring middle lane reflective plastic light things on the road (those yellow square things)i hear this kinda of rattle/tin noise coming from around the front tyre area. took it to the mechanic he couldnt find it. and the only i think it might be is when i hit the tyre with my hand i hear like very similar rattle coming from the brake calipers.

has anyone else got this? as im starting to find it very annoying.

check the metal guardbehind the disc

yeah i did that. however i noticed ..are the brake calipers, the ones which arent bolted to the car supposed to have a bit of free play in them when they are not or dont have pressure applied to them ?

not usually my pads have to play in them at all

Could it be wheel bearings?

Yes the floating part of the caliper would have to have a bit of free play otherwise it wouldn't move. The noise could be coming from the pads rattling around in the caliper as well. Try driving over the orange markers on the road, and when you hear the noise, very lightly apply the brakes. I mean very lightly. What you want is to take up any freeplay in the brakes without putting the brakes on hard. If the noise goes away when you do this then I reckon its in the brakes.

If this happens you could try some brake stop squeal ( not sure of the exact name but you should be able to get it from any good auto parts place. Its made by CRC and is in a orange/red coloured squeeze bottle. Not real expensive) You take the pads out and apply this stuff to the back of the pad. when you put them back in it basically glues the pad to the caliper and stops the pads from rattling or squealing.
Don't put it on the floating part of the caliper.

hope this helps

Not sure if you have alloys and if not, try taking off the hub caps and see if that fixes it.

yeah thanks mate.
i found out there is a little play in the pads and so that sound resonates to the metal shroud that covers the brake disc so ill have to try taht thing you said

I have the same rattle, what brand of brake pads are you using? I have always used Bendix but in an emergency had to use Ferodo. There is about 1.5 to 2 mm free play up and sideways within the caliper.
