Howdy all,

The wipers in my 1987 magna stop at the top of the stroke rather than the bottom, regardless of speed, delay etc. Other that that, they work great.....Any thoughts would be much appreciated...

they might be slipping, or they could just be stuffed
if it were me id leave it, sounds unique :)

You mean when you turn them off, they park up the top?
Sounds odd. Did they just start doing this or has there been something else that could have something to do to with it. It almost sounds like the park part of the wiper motor has failed some how.
You haven't changed the wiper motor have you?

How hard is it to get the wiper motor out? I'm thinking if you could borrow a known working one from somewhere, (local friendly wrecker maybe) pull yours out, disconnnect the linkage but leave the wires plugged in. Then run it and take a note of which way the arm turns and where it stops. Then do the same with the other motor to compare them.

keep us informed

knowing how a wiper motor park mechanism works.....it is really strange for the wipers to park at the top of the stroke. something must be wrong in the wiper motor park wheel, like it is in the wrong spot or it is wired up incorrectly.

haha, maybe someone's modded it to "touring car single wiper" style. :P

(a thankfully short-lived fad)

Thanks for all your replies.

This problem just started one day - the wipers park at the top of the screen rather than the bottom. no changes to the wiper motor or wiring. I reckon the theory that the 'park' mechanism is stuffed, but i don't know where that is. Can anyone help me out and tell me how to check that?

I pulled the front cover off the 'gearbox' (not sure is that's the right term, but it's the box that the motor pokes into. Inside, there was a worm gear off the motor and a large white plastic wheel that is engaed by the worm gear. I can't see anything else...do I need to pull the large black cover off that runs the width of the engine bay, right below th windscreen?

what a lot of stuffing around for windscreen wipers.....perhaps I should just keep the touring car look ;)

Thanks every1

That large geared wheel in the wiper motor assy is the park wheel. If you get that wheel out and it should have a metal electric contact strip on the back of it. the break in this strip should be aligned with the contact in the body (i.e no contact, switch off) when in the park position.
I was thinking about this wiper problem and it occured to me that the most likely cause would be the wiper linkages and nut are loose on the wiper motor drive shaft and the linkages have jumped the shaft spline to 180 deg out.
This would explain why it suddenly happened

Check the easy first, plug contact dirty-corrosion or bad earth as most wiper motors have seperate earth.
