View Full Version : Idle stuffed since cabin light change

Hey all.
Maybe someone can shed some light onto this. Few days ago, i replaced a light bulb in the cabin (you know, the one that turns on when door is open on the roof), and it burned a fuse immediately. I guess it was faulty light bulb. Anyways, i pulled out the fuse and went to supercheap to replace it with another one. On the way there, i noticed the car wanted to stall whenever i was rolling slowly and not accelerating. Sometimes it does stall however. So i thought, hm... maybe the fuse is in some way connected with the ECU or whatever to stop it from stalling. So after replacing the 15A fuse with a 20A fuse, another light bulb worked fine, but the stalling still happens once in a while.
I also notice the idle sits around 600rpm now and sometimes gets too close to the needle stopper.
Now, call me stupid or something, but would a fuse for the lights screw the ECU or idle???
Anybody got any clues what it might be? I checked the rest of the fuses and they all looked ok.
Thanks for ya help.
Oh, i Have a 2000 TH magna

Sounds like when you blew the fuse you've somehow reset your ECU.
Do a proper reset, (disconnect batt terminal for a minute, reconnect, let car idle for 15 minutes, then go for a drive).
Should fix the idling problem

Well, i pulled out all the fuses... would that have the same effect? i would think so, but it wasn't d/c for that long. Maybe a few seconds. Enough for the trip computer to ask me what engine size i have and wether its a sedan/wagon. Hm.. i will reset tomorrow and see how it goes.

might be worth checking the ECU earths.

Yep, doesn't *have* to be a minute, a few seconds may be enough, but you almost certinally would of pulled out the ECU fuse.
just as a precaution, i think u might want to replace the 15 with a 15. maybe the bulb u replaced was a different wattage and drained too much current for the fuse? But yeh, check ur ground.
Seems like the ECU's reset...mine stalls all the time after i d/c the battery.

I will change the fuse back to 15A, but supercheap didn't have any at the time. But it should make any difference unless it asks to draw more current than it should.. Not good for the wires. ;)
The bulb had half the wattage, which means half the current, so it should not have burned it. The bulb must have had a internal electrical short. But oh well

I think u should get a mini spinning disco ball, with lights on it :) I would definately do it after i find some more fluff to cover my ceiling and parcel shelf. :doubt:

I find it hard to believe a bulb could short out a 15A fuse. There is probably more to it then that, especially if the original bulb wasn't lighting up in the first place.
For such a wedge type bulb to be faulty (as a short) would be pretty difficult if you ask me.

Sounds strange. Yeah, try and disconnect the battery like the others said and replace the fuse back to the 15A. Drive it for a few days. Funny that a bulb would blow a 15A fuse though. Very strange. SOunds like something else might be tripping the fuse. Electrics are the biggest pain in the ass. I have seen guys replace fuses with higher amp fuses and have seen entire fuse boxes melt down into slop. Not a good thing.
