i have just bought a 2002 tj magna ralliart with 6000km on the clock, just wanting to know if a k&n filter makes a worthwile difference?

Yes it does. Well worth the money.

Welcome to Aussie Magna :D
IMO yes, I had a panel filter installed first and believe I felt a smoother, more free transition through the gears compared to a stock one... Not massive changes, but a little.
I have a K&N pod set up now (no CAI atm) and have lost power due to the excessive unshielded heat in the engine bay... if I cant get it sorted out I will have to go back to the panel, until I can get something more suited for the pod.
Another reason why I recommend the panel is that you can clean it over and over with a special K&N filter cleaning kit... it's dead easy, and not too expensive (the kit lasts a fair while) and I guess the panel has the 10 Year, 1.6 Million km limited warranty, so you cant really complain about that lol
K&N panel Part Number KN33-2151 (i am pretty sure)
Ahh found it :D

You could always check with Anthony in the Phillcom Rally section,

I recall buying mine at Autobarn for $129

Same but I'll test mine again.
Depends on who you ask. Fencer didn't see a gain. Some say low rpm torque is lost. Others like the saving made with a cleanable filter. Some like the noise. Some like being able to legitify sticking another sticker on their car. Some found idle was then made rough.

Oh Lord, not this topic again :sook: . I was really trying to resist posting again on this subject, really I was - but...
Okay, I'm not going to trash other people's experiences with a K&N panel as maybe it's worked on other vehicles (and please: I'm talking panels not a pod with full CAI). My experience with a K&N panel on my previous TH Sports was totally unimpressive (ie. I couldn't detect any power increase, and in fact I became suspicious that it was contributing to an acceleration flat spot - check in the search as there's a big long thread on that topic from a few months back).
Anyway, I took my current Ralliart, which has the standard Mitsu filter, to the dyno and we ran it several times with the standard filter, with a K&N panel and without any filter at all.
The result: no difference in power on the dyno.
As I said in another thread, if I can't get more power with no air filter at all (ie. it's sucking straight from the atmosphere into the MAS), then how can a K&N filter improve power?
Right, I'm now dismounting from the :soapbox:, and off to therapy...

I haven't notice it make any difference in mine. I won't change it now that it's in, but I wouldn't bother buying one again. Maybe it idles a bit rougher too.
.
I agree with pssssh what i have one and think it makes the engine rev more freely (not huge gains) and I am not saying its the same for every one but i have seen two people get gains a few kilowatts from removing thier filter. This was on graham wests dyno and they suggested doing it to someone who got just under 100kws and wanted to crack the 100 barrier. And it worked.I have not had a problem with flat spots or rough idle but in saying this not every bodys cars are the same and some people have had problems. :D

that was me slug, i wanted to break the 100kw mark, so they removed the filter and i got 100.4kws WOO
Note: in old magna, not UNDER8D lol

Oh, fencer :bowrofl:
Yeah, here we go AGAIN!
You wont see a change in PEAK power, you will free up intake restrictions improving engine effieciency and hence obtain a better more user friendly torque curve. Howeva; pretty usless on it's own. Must do exhaust etc as well to achieve and *feelable* benefit. You will be pleasantly surprised at the bowser - when you finally stop flogging it everywhere trying to tell if its faster or not :D
I've done the POD with CAI and Custom Enclosed Box with removable lid. Enjoy the pics and get into it!!
i have a 3L and found it to do the same as HyperTF said.
smoother drive all round, mainly after a gear change.
was just wondering if the 3L's react better then the 3.5L (even though i would have thought it to work the otherway round "bigger motor, more air etc.")
if you post a reply also tell your motor size plz, see if it helps explain it.......

Mine made my car go BSSSSSSZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!! PTTTTTTCHHHHHTCCHHHHHTCHHHHHHH, i like it  but i had no alternative, otherwise i would have kept the std airbox for sure. they dont make a measurable bit of different

I found a guy on the internet that sells the K/N CAI kit that RPW has for $600 for $289 + shipping, worked out to be around $380 delivered. Will pass this guys email on to anyone interested.

Have you bought one off him yet??
If you send money and it arrives, and it's the right model with a genuine K&N oval Pod then let us know - cause that sounds promising.

i have a 3.0l auto magna which i took to the drags stock as a rock and got 16.4, then i got the k&n rampod filter from rpw and took it down again. i got a 16.2 and i think the temperature was all the same so its pretty safe to say that the pod gave me 0.2 seconds on the 1/4. and it sounded pretty cool too b4 i got my exhaust done.
now i have 2.5 inch exhaust and ive just got my race extractors so im goin to kwinana next wednesday 30th SO LETS GET SOME MAGNAS DOWN THERE!!!!!! :D

And Welcome!
