View Full Version : Power window installation

Ok, seeing as how my bored topic gave me no suggestions, hehe
I will finally install my power windows. however the way i'm doing it is different to factory, otherwise I wouldnt be typing this i'd be installing them.
now what i want to do is have it so the power windows can be used even when the ignition is off, so they always have 12volts.
i will tho have a hidden switch that allows me to cut the power right off so when i leave the car in the car park you cant just put a coat hanger thru and push the buttons.
tho theres an easier way into our cars anyway
so yeah, i know i need a i think 20watt fuse, might be 30, i'll check. but how should i install it. just run it off the battery with relay to switch for power? or what?

Hey thats a great idea!! Im always getting frustrated by the stupid things not working without power and my GF complaining about not being able to put them down whenever she wants!
Relay and switch with an inline fuse sounds like a good way to go.
I might even use the locking switch on the drivers door as the on/off switch as I dont need to stop people using the windows.

thankyou for the decent answer, I would use the override switch, kinda why i wanna put them in.
so you reckon just straight off the battery, fuse after the battery, horn relay to switch then fuse just before the drivers door for good measure?

Yep that would work.
Youd prolly only need one fuse but you could put 2 in if you wanted to. Check what size fuse they windows currently use and get the same. You might even be able to use the current fuse in the fuse box!
You could mount the relay in the door so you dont have to run 2 wires out from the switch. Its hard enough getting 1 wire through the grommets from the battery. Only problem with this is that your 2nd fuse would be inside the door which isnt real handy.
Ive got a relay sitting in my toolbox... might give it a go this weekend if I have the time! :)

the setup with the power window system actually has the main 'controller' plug within the car, all wires lead to the plug that then spreads to the body harness. so i may as well have the relay within the fusebox and run 3 wires.

it uses a 30amp fuse all ull need to do is re route the wire inside to a switch from the relay (pin something or nather ill say 1:P) then put the other end on a full time positive, ive been just thinking of makin a circuit where the windows stop working after i lock the car all u need is 2 extra relays or another idea is make a delayed circuit say 30secs after u turn the car off they stop working all easy 2sec mods
but i think ill just scrap that and get one of thos automatic p/w lifter kits, when u press lock they windows automatcily go up i can get thos kits cheap

yeah, my immobiliser comes with that feature, all i need is another horn relay, then rig it to the over ride switch.
but as we discussed last night, where you use ure windows, id be installing this to stop passengers using theres..... so mehyeh
but ok, 30amp, cool, just gotta wait for the rain to stop.

yes but u still need the lifter kit for the immobiliser

umm, probably, i dunno, havent looked at the schematics for ages. i thought it was just a positive or negative pulse like the central locking.
*shrug* oh well i wont need it anyway, so doesnt matter.
you mean 30 relay? those circular ones. thats only if i was to use the original wiring harness. all mine is custom, cept for the inner doors loom. the horn relay is basic same thing, just 1 extra pin that wont get used.

I have a TH so the it already has that 30sec delay built into the system :D
I just want to mod it so I can use the windows whenever I feel like it without the key, and use the drivers control switch to lock/unlock them.
.... unless I switch the relay by the remote locking... so when I unlock the car the windows have power and when I lock it they dont... heyheyhey!!! An even better idea!! All automatic, I wont have to press any extra butoons!
Now I will just have to locate the central locking unit.

yer thats the type of plan i was taking about but adding the unlock feature
should be easy if you know what your doing
or if you want to make a quick mod just get a small push button and use that to override the relay so if u want to move the windows with the car off just press the hidden button and then move the window :D
