has anyone replaced their ATF with a non-genuine product?? If so, what brand and what were the results?

TP got dextron fluid, seemed fine. filter was also replaced.

i would still recomend mitsu fluid, mainly because mitsu autos seem real fragile. mitsu fluid is the same price aprox isn't it?

Well reason I asked is that we took a TM to a mechanic and they replaced the fluid with who knows what. We assumed it was a Dextron II alternative, but the gearbox is stuffed at the moment, will only go into 1st and 2nd, and then some. Even from 1st to 2nd it doesnt change until very late.

yikes. i very much doubt a mechanic would **** that up. might be the auto's time ay. you could try some new genuine fluid, but it might be a waste of 60 bucks

Yeah well we hope the gearbox still has some life in it.

I mean the car was taken to the shop in working order, and it came out of the shop with two working gears! All the guy could say was "Oh it looks like your TPS is dead, get it check out by the auto electrician".

dont use the normal ATF, you need the mistu one!!!

my TM just got back from service today - my fluid (was mistu one) was a little dirty and old and all i can say - my box feels new

it doesn't slip gears, doesn't surge in overdrive

magna gearboxes are fussy about the fluid - the mitsu atf fluid has an additive that heap with many things in the trans - like the lockup clutch (as i said, my car doesn't surge)

yeah ive never had a problem with generic fluids in magnas, but see'ings they are fairly touchy i would suggest you get the propper stuff

I had unknown in the 'box, until the first changeover. Put Mitsu fluid in, and the transmission seemed to behave itself, until it failed totally. Note: Clutch was defective for 70,000km, so I doubt it was the fluid.

It is not wise to use Dextron or anything similar in an electronic automatic - you will find even Holden and Ford use special stuff for theirs. A mate used Dextron III in his Magna and bye bye OD.

When I had an auto I used to use Type M II Special (Castrol, I think). In any case go to your local auto parts shop and look for something that suits "Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Proton".

my mate changed the auto trans fluid and replaced it with the dextron 3... he got down ther end of the street and the thing would just shudder in any gear. - also would slip gears too

got it back to his house, went and got some of the mitsu stuff and put that in, and i started working again fine...

also the guy who reconditioned and serviced my auto said it's extremely important to put the mistu stuff in - mine got recently serviced cos my overdrive wasn't working and the gears would slip, rev flare when changing gears - the fluid has got a little contaminated... and now the gearbox runs like a dream
