I got quoted by the transmission and suspension specialist $140 ea + $40 labour.

The problem is, I have some good CVs and cant get the old one on the passenger side out of my Magna. I have NFI why it wont pull out :S

Are you sure they're NEW ones, or just "reconditioned" crap?

For that price $110 each, methink that's only "reconditioned".
ie get some old wreck's CV, clean & regrease & reboot.

If your current ones are good (the boot's only recently dumped its grease), often
its better to regrease/boot your existing ones rather than taking the risk of
"recond" ones where you don't know their history.

Speaking from TN experience...

Brand new CVs from Mitsu parts counter are about $350 each, trade price I think.

Reboot kit (boot, grease & clamps) are about $60-70 each.

You need to catch the broken boot early enough to rescue a CV. If its already dry & gritty and has started clicking away, the CV is past it. You'd be fooling yourself if that can be "recond" that to like-new just by wrapping it with new grease.

yeah, from mits there always dearer, i paid alittle about the same as 88 elite, tho without labor, mine were brand new, however 3rd party made. so while there not the 'quality' of mitsu, there still guaranteed to last hell longer than recos and at more than half the price while still having new items.
so like me you may have new, just not genuine mitsu.

To cartman02au post,
Getting the actual CV joints out can sometimes require a bit of force. When i replaced mine, i had to physically get a crowbar in and lever it out that way. Give this a try n see if it will come out.

I got the driveshafts out, but I couldnt split the intermediate shaft on my car or either of the two wrecks (and I sure did try :))

Got my car repaired its alot better now,the quote of 110 for each c.v joint was for the entire driveshafts.... the outer c.v joints are new and the inner joints are recoed.

Where can you buy thirdp party new joints from and how hard is it to replace the CV joint??..
my right CV joint has just started clicking, dose that mean i have to get a hole new joint or just replace a part? and how do you know what is the broken part???

thanks

My first shop that replaced my TN CV... managed to bugger up the oil seal where it goes in the tranny. Drip drip drip, red tranny fluid everywhere - had to keep topping the box up.

Cost a bomb to get that oil seal replaced at Fluidrive.

they aren't hard to replace... i replaced both sides myself after two seperate incidents... first incident, the ball bearing cage collapsed in the drivers side outer joint...
http://bcx7.ath.cx/hosted/pictures/magna/cv.JPG

second incident, i snapped the spline clean off the passenger side outer joint... yes... the spline - which is solid steel... that ended up needed a new hub assembly and wheel bearings  no pics of that yet, cbf getting them onto the pc

both incidents involved large amounts of smoke and loss of traction. and no-one give me **** for doing stupid stuff... i've learnt the hard way already... i dont wanna hear it. also i dont wanna hear anyone say that a carby automatic magna cant smoke up... i have 2 driveshafts to prove they do it quite well...

i'll tell you it's easier to replace the whole driveshaft rather than just the joint. ie. new outer joint was $70, new driveshaft is $110... with a new driveshaft, you get a new inner joint too.

never seen a cv joint ball race break up like that
thanks for the pics
doesnt look like any wear and must have had plenty of graphite before you cleaned it up
not even spline dammage a clean break off --- just a bit of bad luck

what a bugger

the circlip holding the whole set up in place must have broken or come out of its groove
looks like the outer nut wasnt up to the right tension on the first one
yet the one that snapped off must have been over tensioned -thats just a guess

yeah, there was no sign of it going to break like that... there is not much wear... a little bit of pitting on the inner race and the ball bearings. plenty of grease in the joint as well. all the boots were brand newl.

as for the other driveshaft's spline snapping, well there was always noise from that wheel when gearing down... i guess maybe wheelbearings loose? and they eventually fatigued the spline.
