Yo ppl!
I'm planning to do some big-gish mods for my beloved TR (see my Profile). Can't wait!
Problem is insurance. I want comprehensive, but I'm finding trouble insuring the car for any decent value :(
I am currently with the NRMA, agreed value of car set at $3,900. Called (no time to visit in person!) to try to increase the agreed value and associated premium, but the guy won't hear me out and just said they won't insure me. I have 6 years of spotless driving and no claims record, for goodness' sake! :|
Just want to open up the floor and ask all fellow TR owners, Astrons in particular:
* What is the agreed insured value of your TR? What is the maximum agreed value allowed for your insurance company?
* What mods do you have? What mods are allowed in your insurance company?
* How much are you paying for your premiums?
I seriously want to get this sorted out before I really deck my TR out. I will only consider 3rd party as a last resort: I really don't want to swap to a 3rd gen, because it is too common, a little too thirsty for my driving style, and I'll have to put more into any used 3rd gen to take it back to the condition of my TR :)
Cheers! Looking forward to hear from you :D

I'm with NRMA Comprehensive
Agreed value of $6500 with a $1600 premium/year. No idea what the max agreed value is.
Currently there are no mods listed with my insurer apart form the roof racks. So if someone stole my audio system then I can't claim it. I have a Verada front end now too, so if I crash, I can say buh-bye to it.
I've got 16" alloys as well which isn't covered either.
By the way, NRMA will only allow mods up to the 1/4 value of your car. So in my case, I can only mod my car up to $1625 before they say to me to get lost and find another insurer.

Im with RACV, $350 a year full comp, valued at $4000. No mods are listed at all. I really gotta get into contact with them :bowrofl:.
no idea as to what my premium is, however the TS is compro insured for around $10,000 (including audio setup). Ask MISSKS what her car is insured for :bowrofl:

Im with AAMI. I havent got full comprehensive insurance, only third party, fire and theft. that was $423 a year, and my car is valued at $3400. Full comprehensive was going to cost me almost $2000 a year

How are u paying 350 for full comp, your still on your Ps and under 25? is the car under ur name??
also if u dont tell them about the mods, if u have an accident they can turn around and say they wont cover u if they find out about them.. applies to certain mods..

We bought the car when i wasn't old enough to register it in my name, so my dad registered it in his name, which means the insurance is in his name :D, i get a $1600 excess though :(. Yeh i'm gonna tell them my mods, also tell them about my good security system, hey guys, if you tell an insurance company about all the cool security features, ie. alarm, immobiliser, fuel cut off switch, does that lower your premium?

ahh yea, i get ya. i was under the same kinda thing when i started driving..
but when you think about it, that 1600 excess.. if you ever have an accident and its your fault.. the excess is about 70% of what your car is worth really..
Should think about putting it in your name, start building up a rating aswell :)

According to RACV (they were the ones who suggested my dad put his name on the car ), all i have to do is sign a stat declaration when i'm off my P's that i've been driving the car for the last 3 years and i automatically get my rating boosted :).

ahhh ok, thets a pretty good deal.
but from their point of veiw, they'r doing that cause statistically the chance of you having an accident on your P's and making a claim is quite high. So theyr waitin for the $1600 exess to land in their pockets lol
thats how theyd be working i imagine
Just dont have an accident :)

For the folks in NSW,
I heard an ad today for the NRMA claiming if you take full comprehensive out with them they would put the driver on an automatic 65% no claim bonus. (conditions but)
I got a quote from NRMA for comprehensive 6 months ago on a 93 4cyl TR with mags, stereo mods and garaged in a small town. It was $375 for 12 mths from memory. I have a 65% no claim bonus with them. Seeing as i'm older than 25 the excess was $400. I didn't ask what they valued the car at. (I don't care as long as I have at least 1 car on the road)
I have also heard people recommend "just car insurance" as a cheap insurer that will accept mods.

yeh just car except mods no worries but can be a bit more expensive. Im with RACV and they suck pretty bad. Wanted $1800 or something a year for full comp on my TR 4 cylinder and said they would value it at $3900 but that was 3 years ago. Went with the cheaper 3rd party at $345 a year. 3 years driving 2 accidents, one my fault, one not and a speeding fine which i got a couple of weeeks ago for 64 in a 60zone. i dont want to see what theyd charge me now. When i get next car, which im guessing wont be for a while anyway, i think ill go with GIO. ive heard some very good things about them but they are more expensive. spose tho, like everything you pay for what you get.

I'm looking at moving from NRMA to Just Car Insurance for my TH Magna, because they've quoted me a premium of $1000 and a similar excess fee (In my case $800), which is $400 lower then the new quote I got from NRMA since I just turned 21.

My two cents.
I pay $270 per year fully comphrensive. Agreed at $3600.
I battled to get insurance, but get this I have a 60% no claim and haven't had a prang, infridgement or speeding fine for over 5 years!
In the end I rang an insurnace broker and they hooked me up with Lumneys insurance. Did cost $20.
Never had to use them yet so don't know if there any good.

Thank you for all your inputs.
I finally got the time to go to NRMA yesterday. I managed to increase the agreed worth of the vehicle to (gasp!) $6,000, which means I can finally justify putting my long-awaited stereo and suspension mods in there. Yeah! :)
Now I know $6,000 is heaps. But the car has only done 131,000-odd kays, I happened to be dressing real nice before work, the lady was very nice, and she let me do it. So it's all good :)
Premium now sits at around $800/year comprehensive after various discounts. Mum is still (supposedly) the owner and main driver, with me being the under 25 driver (24!) with Rating 1.
I have tried for an online estimate from JustCars (they sent back the quote after human analysis), but they are asking more than $1,000/year, and they won't insure me for 1 cent more than $5,000!
Now I know I will get told off by some of you about me getting ripped off etc., but I am just posting this for your information.
I heard that Suncorp does a good job too, with, apparently, a 28-point mods checklist. Might go and ask them about my situation as well.
Thank you once again for all your help!
Jeff

... if you tell an insurance company about all the cool security features, ie. alarm, immobiliser, fuel cut off switch, does that lower your premium?
Yes. Telling them about any anti theft devices on your car will lower your insurance cost.
I'm Driving a stock 1991 TR Magna and I pay 600 bucks a year full cover. Not sure the agreed value of the car. Being a 20% driver of the car (parents being the other 80%) Insurance is cheap as, especially if your parents are premier rating one with RACV.
:D
I had my TP insured for $3000. Cost me $474pa, with a $850 excess

Actually when I was under 27 (not THAT long ago) I had a TT Soarer and a R33. I found them cheaper to insure than a brand new Hyundai Excel/ Accent thingy.
You'll find once you are over 21 and own a common car i.e Magna insurance will be a LOT cheaper. If your over 21 go get a broker and save a bundle.
