Was just wondering if its ok to disconnect the battery. What happens to the onboard computer?

Nothing will happen to it, will just reset itself. I woud be disconnecting the battery to put in a new HU without doubt.

your car will stall for the first 30 minutes of driving every time you stop at the lights but after that it'll go normal, maybe if you do it really quick you can get away without it resetting

ps. i fixed my deck, loose wire as far as a can see, just wiggled it and plugged it back in, works fine now
