no, its my RACV card, not a pension card lol. By showing my card at certain places i save various amounts. At bursons it is 5 - 15%, repco its a flat 5%, and other various discounts and offers at various stores.

PeteW: Im pretty sure you need to remove the motor, because theres not much room down the side there, but you can give it a go and tell us how you go?

It is possible to replace everything in-situ, but it's far easier to lift the lot.
Mine's getting replaced outside the car, as I've still got to remove the extensively damaged block.

well i dont really have the place n means to pluck the motor so inhouse is the place it will happen, i was thinking of undoing the engine mounts (left n right side) lift the gearbox side up that will allow me at it from the passanger side wheel arch, remove the sump etc, what ya think?
what i did was lift the front of the engine (where the chain is) up and get the engine mount out, then you have to pull off the a/c compressor, alternator and power steer pump (yeah fun).
what i did was not to take off the gearbox mount, but all i did was undo the crossmember at the front centre of the car and that let the whole engine go far enough down to pull off the crank pulley.
i found that was pretty effective. I may have to do this again (although id rather not) to replace the oil pump as i think its a bit iffy. Also you dont have to take the sump off, although its a good excuse to clean out the sump.

nah you will need to take the head off too. i would recommend it anyway.
1. drain coolant and oil
2. take head and sump off...
3. undo engine mount on timing chain side
4. there is enough room to put all ur new components in for sure
ive taken the timing chain cover off before with the engine still in the car, but didnt take the head or sump completely off. wen i put the timing chain cover back on, the head gasket got mashed and the gasket around the timing chain cover was everywhere (used gasket goo). was the dodgiest thing ive ever done.
so yeah... i wouldnt do it unless u took both the head and sump off. try do it any other way and u ARE asking for trouble. trust me

PeteW: If i HAD to do it with the motor still in, heres how: DO Everything to remove the motor, take driveshafts out etc, place a bit of wood on the CORNER of the sump, and get your trolley jack under the block and jack it up, take the weight of the motor, now undo the passenger side engine mount, and the front and back mounts, leave the drivers side mount attached, now jack the motor up, it should pivot on the remaining engine mount, MAKE SURE THE JACK DOESNT SLIP!! IT WILL BE DISASTER IF IT DOES!. This should lift the motor up enough to work on the timing chain assembly, now im not sure if you need to remove the sump or not, you shouldnt have to. Now if you get a couple of tight bolts, be CAREFUL when trying to undo them, that jack could slip easy....Now you see why its easier to pull the sucker??
You other guys will have other opions, but thats how I would do it...Hope i helped.

meph, did you pop off the head doing it your way?, timing chain casing anything is a pain in the arse. i dont really want to remove the head unless it cant be helped + side to this is i can clean the carbon off my pistons that i think is adding to my detination in hot weather

if u are gunna do it, u might aswell do it properly. wen i did it and didnt take the head off, i tried to put the timing chain cover back on and it mashed the head gasket alittle. NOT cool. though, i didnt have the sump off completely. i just had half the bolts taken out so i could lever the sump downwards. (dodgy lol)
there is nothing wrong with taking the head off... undo the 12 bolts holding it down (10 head bolts and 2 smaller bolts). just means youll need new gaskets for intake, exhaust and head gasket. u can even take the head away and get a mild port and polish done :). and clean the top of ur pistons as u said. but yeah, once u break the seal to the old head gasket, do u really think u are going to mate it up perfect again with no leaks? go buy a lottery ticket first ay
petew, no i didnt take off the head, the top of the cover where part of the head gasket was did get ripped, and we had to stick gasket goo in there, but that is in no way detrimental to the operation of the engine, sure if you look in the engine bay it looks kinda dodgy, but just looks

Nah, mine doesnt include the gears though :) I think normally they sell for around $220, I just get a discount because I live in their shop (or it feels like it).
Gears are pretty expensive as a rule, I remember pricing 2 for a T5 manual the other week, was cheaper to buy a S/H one from the wreckers!!!!
