View Full Version : Idle speed - vibes?

Just going on from the vibes I feel while stationary, in gear.

I'm wondering if perhaps my idle is too low. Take a look:

That's at normal operating temp, in drive, foot on the brake.

If I bring the revs up ever so slightly, the vibes seem to disappear.

Anyone have any suggestions? Is the idle even adjustable? I've heard mention of some idle speed control servo or something.

The idle speed in an auto will drop when you put it into drive while you are stationary with your foot on the break. By lookin at the picture, i do not think that it is too low for when ur in D with the breaks on. Its probably a little bit low if it was like that in neutral or park, but not too low. A little bit of vibration when in D and stationary is normal. This is because the engine is trying to make the car move forwards slowly because you are in drive, and you are stopping it from doing that by having your foot on the break. It is normal. But if it seems to be too much there might be a problem.

I have a really lumpy idle in my 99 TH as well when in drive. Anyone know what needs fixing? I’ve done a search and noticed that other people have had the same problem but haven’t yet seen a cure. I had my engine mounts checked at last the service and they were fine

i think i have posted something like this before but ive forgotten where. Assuming the basic stuff is in good order eg(worn plugs, leads, dirty throttle body ect).
adjust base settings.....tps and isc motor position. (best bet refer to mitsu dealer)
try re-setting youre engine mounts...although they look and probably are ok, these vehicles suffer from vibration through the mounts unless the mounts are loosened off, unloaded and retightened in a neutral load position...this must be carried with the vehicle sitting on its wheels on the ground, as the body/chassis/crossmember flex will throw out all youre hard work by roughly half a hole. it doesnt sound like much but it can make a whole lotta difference.
There is also a moddified front roll stopper mount(usually not need after carrying out reset procedure)

hope this helps

cheers

WHat do the rpm's sit on when in Neutral?

700rpm + or - 50rpm is base idle
when dropped into drive the revs should drop slightly but the steps should increase to maintain close to target idle.

I had a similar problem and just raised my revs to 800 RPM when in drive and the Vibrations dissapeared. In neutral the Rpm sits just under 1000 rpm. Its easy to adjust the idle there is a screw indicated in the pic and turn that screw anticlock wise for more rpm and clockwise or less.

If the vibrations while you have a smooth 800rpm idle are really high freqency and fast there is litle you can do about it. just a problem associated with FWD auto's. alot of cars do it. replacing mounts SOMETIMES works, but rarely

You are right about the mounts i had em replaced under warrenty it helped the problem a little but the vibration was still there. Its so annoying. There are two solutions the easy one is to adjust the idle. The other is to get the timming advanced slightly and that fixes the problem too.

makes it a little hard on a third gen doesn't it? i didn't think you could adjust the timing on the v6 motor.

idling it up should be right.

I had a go the other day but couldn't find any screw to adjust the idle.

I believe that photo is of the 3.5L engine; is the adjuster located in the same spot on my 3.0L?

If so, perhaps a closeup photo would help me ;-)

Thanks
