Got some alternator noise.
Setup : pioneer 6x9, sony headdeck, pioneer 6"s, Blaupunkt amp. Everything but the amp is brand new
I have tried all the crap like redoing ground putting rca's opposite side but I am still getting noise. My ground is good 4 gauge wire that has soldered connectors, is 1m long and is on a good paint free ground point.
I am going to buy one of those noise cancellers from jaycar tomorrow to see if that will fix it.
What else could be the problem? Everything seems good and all my power and grounds are nice.

Narrow it down, unplug the rca's and plug a discman straight into the amp. Play it and start up the engine.
If you still have noise. It is a problem with your amp's grounding.
If you don't it is a problem with the rca's or headunit.
If so rewire the rca's through the car avoiding all electrics. Eg through the centre of the car through the ski port. If you still have the noise it is the headunit. or interference at the back of the headunit.
Let us know how u go.
What rca's u got?
Where did u ground ur amp? How short is the lead?
Peace

Got one of the $30 noise cancellers from jaycar that gets wired directly inline with the power cable. Seemed to clean up most of the noise but it is still there.
My RCA's seem good and expensive.
I will try the discman thing soon to see if it works.
Amp grounded to seatpost and is 1m long. 4 gauge wire for that
1m long ground wire ??
u dont want it that long 50cm tops

Just wondering if a capacitator would fix the noise? Would I need an audio one such as a 1 farad or something a bit smaller?
Are you in NSW? If so I'd be happy to look over it and diagnose the issue for you. :)

Thanks for the offer mate but I am in Queensland (Townsville).
Still got a couple more options before I go and get it professionally done. Hopefully get them done by the weekend.

Capacitators store power....preventing voltage spikes and regualting the power. How could this be a bad thing for alternater noise?
I know that smaller ones are used to try and get rid of the noise...so why wouldn't a big one help in this situation?
Can you actually back up your argument instead of cough cough.

It is an expensive band aid to a smaller problem. The problem is noise entering ur setup. Easier fixes are better quality RCA's. Mapping out ur RCA's better around the cars electronics and better grounds for your gear. A cap will offer no protection against most altenator whine issues afaik
If you get a capacitor for free then it may be worthwhile but the only real problem they will solve is dimming lights. Even then you can solve this problem by upgrading ur battery which would be more worthwhile.
Before a cap, Id recommend a new deep cycle battery.
Thicker wire 4, 2, 0 gauge through to amps
Upgrading the ground at the engine bay.
Upgrade Altenator wiring.
manufacturers recommend 1 farad per 1000w. A decent 1 farad cap will set you back $400 ish...
I would recommend never using them. They are just an avenue for more problems in ur car.
Worst case if you are driving 5000 w + go the boot mounted battery.
You are talking about a 1 farad cap and not a tiny 5 amp noise suppressor yerr??
Peace

hey man yeah im new to this thing umm ive got a pretty big system and i got a standard battery and also a 5 farad cap and i still got a little engine noise but just from my front speakers the subs are all good no noise there. If you want to replace your rcas i recommend streetwire there the best i reckon and alot cheaper then the others. all my ground wires are about no longer then 20cm.

Where exactly is your amp(s) mounted? I have one on the back of the ski port, with the ground going to the seat mount on the drivers side of the car, and another amp under the drivers seat grounding to the seat mount.
The ground for the one behind the ski port I spose is around the 1m mark, and I have no troubles with alternator whine.

It ended up being the amp (secondhand) got a new kenwood and it sounds great. No whine at all.
