Dont use anything other than the K&N filter cleaner
Other detergents can screw up the filter.
It's only 30 bucks for the kit..might as well do it right.

If you got a K and N, then you gotta use the cleaning kit like KB said, it retails for around 30 bucks from your good auto shop. K and N uses oil to trap the dirt unlike other brands which u can just use water and spray it out.

Make sure you spray it out with low pressure water and spray from the filtered side out...
IE: the side that doesnt collect the dirt out, otherwise you may push the dirt further into the filter.

that's why K&N wasn't a very good 'invention'. the oil that it uses to trap dirt can be sucked onto the oxygen sensors and ultimately fry it. some mitsu mechanics have despised the K&N filter cos they know what caused alot of O2 sensors to go dead and they're correct. so, when you re-oil the filter, don't think 'more is better'. do as thin a coat as possible first and let the filter sit for a night. finish off the un-oiled spots the next morning, again, go easy on the oil!

Yeah, I think Scubasteve might back this one up. I think I recall him saying that WRX's had an issue with something along these lines.

yea damn i wouldn't have got the K&N if i had known this earlier. i'd have gone for Blitz filters or something that doesn't use troublesome oil!

It also says specifically in the instructions exactly what alf77 said. Go light on the oil otherwise it can cause problems.
It's not K&N the people should despise..it's the people who dont read the instructions they should despise.
