Hey guys just wanted to know what are the advantages (or disadvantages if any) of switching to Premium Unleaded on my 91 TR (2.6 4Cyl). Can I put in the new type straightaway or is there something I have to watch out for. Sorry if this is a lame question...but this is my first car

Cheers

Not much of a difference, it gives a little extra power and a little extra kms to tank. Nothing much though, Ohh and its better for your engine.

The only thing you have to do to your car to use that fuel is park it at bowser that dispences premium.

it's good 2 use 4 a mnth or so. cleans out the fuel system. mine was really dirty and i used PUL every time and i went 2 regular unleaded 2 wks ago and the power gain and the laggy driving has disappeared. so my advice is 4 u 2 put regular unleaded in and if ur car is running dodgy or sluggish change 2 PUL 4 bout 2 wks and then put regular back in. its good 2 run the PUL through ur car every now and again. hope this helps. btw i have the same car as u.

Premium makes a big difference for larger engines such as falcons and V8's and performance cars but with a N/A 4 cylinder it really doesnt make all that much difference. But saying that ive been doing some comparisons with brands of fuel on regular unleaded and have found that i get the best fuel effeciency from Mobil above all others. Shell is next best followed by BP. Thats after averaging about 10 tanks for each brand.

Would do it once a month or so, clean out the fuel system and get rid of cloggy bits etc, doe's increase power & Km's by a bit.

Works well in almost every car

it's not the size of an engine that determines whether premium will make a difference or not.
Theory is: There is little point in running premium in a carby fed motor or an efi motor that does not have a knock sensor unless the timing is advanced to take advantage of the higher octane fuel.
(i have seen exception eg, VN's without knock sensors that gain 100km a tank on premium, so i say theory)

The TR 4cyl EFI has a knock sensor that is used by the computer to retard the timing if predetination is detected. With this system the spark timing is constantly being adjusted to maintain it at the point where it will produce peak power without the engine knocking. (as long as the "fulli-sick" stereo and subs aren't tricking it and retarding the timing :bowrofl: )
Premium has more bang than standard unleaded and the timing will be computer advanced to take advantage of it. (works best if base timing is between 13-15degs in TR efi) so again theory is that there should be an improvement in performance and economy in a 4cyl EFI TR running premium. I have tried premium and didn't find the improvments as great in the 4cyl magnas as it is in some other makes. Others i have talked too claim big improvments in economy in a 4cyl magna, It also depends on engine condition and driving style too.

I try premium in every car i buy and i use it when there is a gain in distance per tank that justifies the extra cost of using premium (if the km gain per tank is more than the extra cost of the fuel, like my VN was, then premium is cheaper that unleaded to use)

Ive got a 2.6 TR as well.. since ive owned it ive been getting 400-420 ks outta a full tank just using regular unleaded, thinking premium is a waste for such a crappy car. That continued for 2 years.. always got the same amount of distance.

Decided to switch to premium, i use BP Premium now. After a couple of weeks i noticed im getting 450 - 470 tops out of a full tank. As well as peace of mind that its 'cleaner' for the car.. Ive been using it for over a year now and always get that extra 40-50 ks with premium.

If you want experiece from someone with the same car, there it is. :)

Oh and no, you dont have to do anything, just chuck the fuel in straight away. Keep using the premium and you'll notice the increase in efficiancy.

Not much difference? I put premium petrol in my 1993 2.6L TR and it made a noticable difference to the power, still not much, but enough to notice. I have also noticed it runs smoother with PULP than it did with standard unleaded. I used to get about 450kms per tank and i now get atleast 550kms. So much for the difference being "not much" lol So yes, you should use it! its definitly worth it!

I get about 50-100kms extra a tank out of my carby gen1... I've advanced the timing a crap load (it's running at something like 17 degrees) only on a stinking hot day it might occasionally ping... i've noticed it depends on the fuel that goes in though... I put BP ultimate and my car never pings, even on a stinking hot day
