Hi all, my ride is an 2003 AWD Verada(feb.) Gr8 car ,and its been faultless from new.Sable with Black leather interior with sandstone carpet ,18 in Rommi Thunder Mags and 235/40/18 Hankook K106, exhaust and K&N filter element(original air ducts in place).

So, it looks good, sounds good, breaths better and has a big footprint. But I still want more performance grrrrrr. (dont we all).
Without going to bolt ons mods ie. super/turbo chargers, injectors etc etc and without going internal ie. big bore/pistons, cam, bigger valves, porting etc etc, HOW much better can the cars be tuned by modifying the cpu

Talk to ten guys who have had chips installed and you"ll get ten different favourite chips-which one is better? and what was achieved? Maybe i'm way off base here but Performance, to me, is not just about the engines KW output (seems most guys get a chip installed/dyno tuned and are happy to see a KW improvement toss in some feul economy and its all good).I want more than just a KW improvement. The power must get to the ground better to gain Performance.
CAN the auto box be timed, in real time, on a dyno, like the engine managment is re-tuned? WHAT about the All wheel drive system? I believe that the system starts off as a 50/50 split and will react to driving conditions. correct? the drive can switch from 70/30 front to rear and visa versa. CAN the cpu be reprogrammed to send 70 % drive to the rear and 30% to the front for example? Would the car feel more like a rear wheel drive car? Is it worthwhile considering or better to leave it the way it is? Just asking, just curious about how many things could be Tweeked by Re-mapping work.

Does any member know of a good tuning workshop who may be able to offer advice on the choice of Chip and to what mods can be achieved .
I'd luv to have my car pumping a lot more power, putting the grunt thru a closer and faster changing box( autos work off solinoids right? either on or off. stand to reason the timeing of the on off periods will be cpu controled so modifying the changes should be easy) Luv to have some rear wheel feel as well, a little drift perhaps??? in an AWD. hehehe.
Thanks
Stephen

I'm using Greddy ECU with all the additional harnesses etc.
Hasn't been properly dyno tuned yet so I can't tell you the gains.

Hi mate,

You don't stand to gain much from chipping an otherwise stock car. You need to help it out a little by improving the flow of your exhaust, at least with extractors and a nice high-flowing muffler, and by improving your intake with a smooth big bore cold air induction setup.

If you hunt around for the thread The Ego started about his Haltech you can see that his relatively stock car (but with exhaust modifications) picked up 6kW at the wheels at the top end, and made good gains through the mid range as well. The net effect was a 0.2 sec reduction in his 1/4 mile times. His peak power figure sits at around 136kW ATW.

On the other hand there are cars around that have had extractors, a high flow exhaust, cold air induction, a 70mm (up from 65mm) throttle body and a chip and tune that have pumped closer to 150kW at the wheels.

Basically, throw a chip on and you'll get a 5% improvement, but use a chip in conjunction with other mods and the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

As for tweaking the auto box or changing the torque split in the AWD system... a piggy back won't help you here, and even a full replacement ECU will probably leave the factory transmission control circutry in service. I don't know of any after market chips that can take full control over even the auto box, let alone any electronically controlled torque distribution through the centre diff.
