Is it possible to tell by listening to a car whether it has extractors as opposed to stock headers? Also, does it change the note of the exhaust?

Big difference in sound!! i went from stock to just a muffler, then a few months later i got the cat back done, then a week after that extractors. Without extractors you get a bit of a drone noise around 2,500RPM and then i goes quieter. With extractors, there is no drone and it just gets louder and clearer as the revs rise, with a pod as well-can't beet the noise

Any car that I have ever heard with extractors has always had more sound up front and under the car, it is weird and hard to explain unless you have the car stock then put them on, but it does sound gooooood. ;)

Yes, but barely.. it will still change the exhaust note slightly whether u have an aftermarket mullfer or not. :D

Hey heydude

More noise with headers vs stock extractors is most likely due to std being cast iron and header is much thinner metal, sheet material.
So, the sound is not that well insulated. Wrap some asbestos rope around it to silence it - noooooo just joking!!!!!!!! :p

I think your onto something there killer, a few of me mates have had it done and it is more noticeable up front obviously cause that's where the new metal is, and cause it is thinner material that must account for the extra noise. ;)

what exactly are headers? how much extra power can you get from changing the extractors?

Headers are the start of the exhaust system attached to the block. Extractors are another term for headers but usually implies that they are custom headers. I'm not sure what figures you'd see but I'm hoping for around 5-8Kw's or more. I've heard that someone gained around 15Kw, (can't remember the exact figure), with the addition of extractors and an aftermarket chip. If you have a reasonably free flowing system, the best increase you'll see is in torque, which then translates into power at the top end of the rev range.

P.S. Alf, are you interested in joining us for the cruise on Wednesday next week? Also, your nic says alf77. Were you born in 77 and where about's do you live again?
