First of all hi all ive just signed up :)

Im looking into maybe getting my self a 97 magna, but first wanted to find out some small details before i go ahead.

How big are the fuel tanks on these 3.5L 97 Magnas?

How many Ks do you get out of that full tank?

Are these reliable in general?

Thanx in advance :)

Welcome to AM

Well the fuel tanks on them are 71ltrs and they are very good on fuel econ i got about 600+ ks out of a tank with 11 or so ltrs left.

The engines in the 97 magna are 3L unless u get a Verada, the 3.5L came to the magna in the TH range then in the TJ range there were almost no 3ltrs left and almost all were 3.5L

They are a reliable car ive had mine for 4 or so years and only replaced the CV boots and 1 CV joint and then the water pump and thats all.

one thing to watch out for is the TE magnas sometimes buggy auto's although most have been probably fixed by now still sumthing to watch out for

and yes 3.5 ltr motor wasnt avail in the magna range in the TE-TF models (cept for some rare 3.5l sports TF's) only in verada models (KE-KF) if i was u save a few more penny's and get a TH exec or atleast a TF if the 3.0 vs 3.5ltr motor thing doesnt bother you!

Hey hey , thanx for warm welcome.

I currently have a 98 Subaru Forester and im selling that due to my proposal to my girl very soon, and also mooving out so need money for that.

Once i sell the Fory i will be looking at a much cheaper option, which is under 10g car so 8g will be the go. Im looking at ither 97 4door lancer or a 97 magna.

Im looking for both to have auto reason is that my gf cant drive manual so even now with my manual Fory its a pain sometimes when i cant drive or dont feel like it she cant take over. So if were going to QLD, yep i have to drive all the way lol

Reason why im interested about Magnas because theyre so under rated and are for sale everywhere and are pretty cheap, plus people say that with normal driving not thrashing it magna will eat same amount of fuel due to lower revs needed to get moving than a screaming four.

So from what i understand base models 96 - 98 all came 3.0L ..? Im not looking for power, looking for economy, comfort and space. Oh yeh most important reliability:)

Yeah I would go the Magna over the Lancer as if you are going to be travelling a long distance the Magna is way more comfortable...

I picked up my 96 Exec Manual 3litre for $6.,700 and it has only 130.000k's on the clock so they are out there...
just finding one is the hard part..

good luck and I hope you will find what you are looking for... Post piccies up when you find your Magnficient Magna..

For $9000 you could get a 1999 TH 3.5L Magna executive if you want the 3.5L engine. I would seriously stay clear of a Lancer. They are small, cramped and unimpressive at 92kw. A 3.5L Magna is about 150kw on the other hand, smoother, cruisier and has more features. Not to mention the fact that the same year Magna is worth over $10,000 more brand new than the same year Lancer is.

Good stuff, but since theres 3.0Ls around i think ill try to find them, as i mentioned, im not really eager on performance, im truying to stay economical:)

I'd go for a low km TF 3.0 if you have to get an auto. Should find one for $8k easily. As someone else said, the auto in the TE has had issues, although im not entirely sure it was fixed by the TF models?

you serious? i am a lead foot too but my manual TE gets at worst 12L/100kms (500kms per 60L)

HAHAH i have lead foot during weekends and sometimes going to uni or back and my economy is soooo good.

I usually get 625 and 11L left in the tank when i filled up, so i get betwee 9.5-10L/100km.
Also a high flow muffler has helped with my econ to so i recommend getting one.

Divine, ur in NSW so if your close to sydney (or in it) gor ound to the car yards, crap loads of magnas and most of them are auto... I know this cause i was lookin for a manual (found one) and I was in that same boat couple of months ago 'choosin between a lancer or Magna', no regrets on gettin the magna....
more power, much nicer interior and overall a better car..>!
P.S i got a 96 TE for little under 5,500 so 8 grand limit should find a fair few round that price!

Welcome to the group Divine.

I have a 1997 TF with 248,000 on the clock. It's still runs very well. The only problem i've had is a fault in one of the headlights (ended up being a fault in the wiring harness).

I get 600k out of a tank with the reserve still remaining.
