Hi There,

I have an annoying brake problem that some bright soul out there in AussieMagna land will be able to help me with :-)

There is a scrapping sound when I put my foot on the brake. Before you all reply saying it's the pads I can tell you all it isn't. I have checked the pads and they all (front and rear pads and the handbrake shoes) have less than 50% wear. Also it seems to mainly happen when the car/brakes are cold.

"Strange" I thought. So I then stripped the front hubs (I'm reasonably sure the scrapping is coming from the front) and couldn't find anything wrong. I looked for shiney metal or any other tell tale signs but found nothing

Any ideas? Are you willing to help a Kiwi cousin

it's not a rock or something stuck in a pad is it?

I never took the caliper apart and a stone or something similar stuck in there would make sense.

Thanks

Can't ya just feel the trans Tasman love

I'ts glazed pads. My dad had them the brakes barely worked even though they were at least 70% .New pads and a proper wear in and all was fixed. But odds are it might come up in the future again ,then come the slotted dba's.

if its a rock wouldnt there be a squeeling sound? also youd be able to tell because there'd be grooves in the rotor

hard cheap pads, poss a stone or grit under a pad.

Are these the groved pads, if not cut a crove across the pad, inthe centre, provided they are asbestos free of course.

ALWAYS machine rotors when replacing pads

It could be the pads though if they're glazed you don't need new ones. Just roughen them up on soume concrete and it's all good. If they're cheap and nasty pads though you may as well throw them and get some good quality ones.

I'm going to strip it all down tomorrow (again  ) so I'll check the pads then.

I'll post the result.

Thanks for all the advice.
