Just after a bit of a clue as to what amp to put into my car...

I can get two Jaycar 2x100W = $170
Sony 4x500W = $229
Boss 4x1000W = $179

Which would be better and why? All I want to do is connect two outputs to the fronts, and two to the rears.

Cheers

BOSS? :gtfo: I've seen and heard what these beasty 1000w monstrosities can do!!

Don't get one. Sony does have a bad reputation, but hell, I probably still wouldn't get one. Jaycar amps are cool, everyone loves jaycar, and the power figures are probably more realistic *cough* boss...

Problem is...do you want a 4 channel or a 2 channel? Sounds like you want a 4, which means you'd probably have to get the sony one huh.

Pays to lurk around for 2nd hand stuff too

I've been speaking to Tim on Gdivison and he can get me all the gear for $205 (inc wiring), All I need to do is install it. Witht he two Jaycars, I would probably have one under passenger seat for the fronts, and one under parcel tray for rears. Or with the 4 channel, just wack it under the parcel tray.

Which is better, 4 or 2 channel?

Are you sure the sony one puts out 500 watts per channel? Seems a bit overkill if it did exist, stay away from them all. Buy something nice and shiny like the da vinci's: gold plated soundstream goes well with a magna i think...

Sony and Boss will both have max power ratings (not rms anyway) which will be irrelevent. The Jaycars might put out more than all of them. Might put out more than both combined lol

I'd go the Jaycars over them, they have a good reputation for sturdy equipment and their testing is more 'respectable' than Boss and Phony

edit: I hope thats not upside down under the parcel shelf...

All it says is 4Channel 500W Sony Xplode....

Which is better? 4 or 2 channel, or just different.

One has two channels, eg for 2 speakers, can usually be bridged into one channel. The other has 4 channels for 4 speakers which can be bridged into two channels.

In that sense the 4 channel is more practical, u can put a heap of power through just the fronts by bridging it, run the fronts and a sub, run two subs run all 4 speakers, run active front stage.

Depends what you want it for.

If you want to amp all four speakers, ur best bet would be a 4 channel.

Just dont pay attention to unbeleivable power ratings.

Alright then, I'm thinking the two Jaycars might be the way to go then, simply for output. Cheers Guys!

Don't mean to hijack your thread (sounds like you are decided ;)), but I am considering getting amped up this year but I am pretty hopeless with the tech stuff.

Anyway, I have this set up at the moment:

Pioneer Head Unit DEH-P5650MP
Pioneer Rear 240W 6x9's TS-A6960E
Pioneer Front 150/100W 6.5" splits

The splits are piggybacked onto the wiring for the fronts. The whole system sounds pretty darn good for what it is anyway, but you always want more of course

If I amped up the fronts, there is no risk to the splits running off the same wiring is there? they wont start distorting?

I havent the first clue as to what amp, I am thinking 4 Channel serving front and rears, and I know you are going to chant "GET A SUB!!!" but I don't think i will... rather upgrade all the current speakers before id do that, don't really want to sacrifice boot space. Any recommendation on a 4-channel amp for my current set up? (yeah throw some figures at me... i'll say uhuh! wont understand a word, but at least I have something to start with)

Cheers in advance audio buffs :D

You could keep in the pioneer fan if you want :P GM6100F or whatever they ahve these days.

I like the JL 300/4.... but anything from Eclipse, Alpine, Phoenix Gold or Soundstream would do well for you jolly 'ol chap

lol not like you to hijack threads htf. How much u looking to spend Ol man?
I take it u wont be paying anyone to do this... (I've seen ur site with ur car audio prowess ;))

Where would you want to mount the amp? Under the seat? Or in the boot?

I'd consider getting a 4 channel. Doing all the speakers for now, then you have the easy option of plugging a sub into it. Running the fronts off channel 1 and 2 and bridging 3 and 4 for the sub. Then leave the rears off the headunit

You can just remove the sub box if you need the space.

So u have to factor in Connectors, Fuse, wiring (8gauge for just one amp to run speakers) If you plan on upgrading to a sub combo I'd go with 4 gauge and be done with it.
Other things: RCA cables, speaker wire etc.

Once you amp your gear you'll find that you have a lot more midbass at your fingertips. Your doors will become very noisy (Hate to say it but magna's are really bad for rattles in their doors compared to their European counterparts)
To combat this I'd recommend at least a little bit of deadener It may sound like overkill but it really does do wonders. Cheaper stuff can be purchased from Jaycar. Although this is not as high quality. Expect to spend anywhere from $20 up to $200 deadening doors. All depends how far you want to take it.

You can go one step further and seal up your service holes with MDF. (baby steps Tim... Baby steps...;) We'll make an enthusiast out of you yet Neil!

There's a lot of bargains to be found if you look in the right place too.

Edit: Hyper, are your fronts a split system package? Or a Coaxial (two-way speaker) with a tweeter piggy backed on? Have you got a crossover for them?

If you bought them in a whole package then the crossovers wil be able to handle this, you may need to buy a crossover for them otherwise.

Peace

I might just mention that I have a 4 x 500 and a 4 x 1000 amp here. The 500 is about two feet long and one foot high and the 4 x 1000 is twice it's size. ;)

bahh haaaa ha :bowrofl:

Do i hear tru tech hammer or thesis or crown? Dont JL head units have 1400W :bowrofl:

Ummm some 10inch subs only need a 0.5cuft box, school bags are bigger

You will just have to put some shpping on the back seat lol

WOW! thanks heaps to those who replied...

Well I only installed the speakers... I was getting brave enough to wire up the HU but chickened out at the last minute (knowing me after I finish with it my wipers would turn on when I turn the HU on), but VRX_MY02 was kind enough to complete the install for me.

Yeah, good question, under the seat sounds good as in utilising space but for ease of access the boot would be wiser I guess, just need a tad more wiring.

EASE UP TEX!! I just finished a week of analysing SQL, ASP and HTML code... my brain is feeble... he he ;) (I sort of get where you are coming from, don't worry)

so I cant just fill my entire doors up with that instant foam in a can stuff...damn! Yeah I had to do a little deadening with my left hand front for some reason... but I hear you... nothing worse than hearing that.

Ha! I am enthused but just not good at fiddly things... patience is not strong... (goodness knows why I build PC's on the side... getting those case wires hooked up does my head in)

Well they came as a package http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/car_entertainment/speakers/tsc1602/
I would need crossovers by the sounds.

I am stuck for time but will reply again when i get a chance... thanks again for spending the time to reply, you too Eek, I have written this down :D
